  • Household food insecurity among refugees

Open Access•Michael T Wagaba, Christopher Garimoi Orach et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2026

Background Over a quarter of Uganda’s population is food-insecure. Agrarian refugee populations are disproportionately affected; however, evidence on how food insecurity varies across refugee settlements by climatic region remains limited. Objective We assessed refugee household food insecurity across three settlements located in different climatic regions of Uganda. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 600 refugees from Kiryandongo,…

  • Effects of climate change-related hazards on food security and health within refugee settlements in Uganda

    Open Access•Michael T Wagaba, Jean‐Pierre Van Geertruyden et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Climate change presents more dire impacts on food security and health in Africa than any other region worldwide. These impacts are expectedly more pronounced in predominantly agrarian refugee settings like Uganda, which is also the largest refugee host in Africa. However, there is limited contextual evidence regarding the effects of climate change-related hazards in Uganda to guide context-relevant interventions amidst the ongoing aid…

  • Trends in malaria prevalence among school-age children in Mainland Tanzania, 2015–2023

Open Access•Frank Chacky, Joseph T Hicks et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

In high-transmission areas, school-aged children have higher malaria prevalence and contribute significantly to the transmission reservoir. Malaria infections can be asymptomatic or present with symptoms which may contribute to anaemia, severe illness and fatal malaria. This analysis provides trends of malaria prevalence and associated risk factors among school-aged children in mainland Tanzania. Data for this analysis were obtained from nationwi…

  • Malaria-malnutrition interaction

Open Access•Jeremiah John Hhera, Geofrey Makenga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Although substantial efforts to control malaria are ongoing in the study setting, the dual burden of malaria and malnutrition remains significant. Anti-malaria use for preventive purpose may not be sufficient to improve nutritional status, reinforcing that integrated interventions are required to address both malaria and malnutrition. Public health efforts should combine malaria control with nutrition programs, including community-driven strategi…

  • An ancillary care policy in a vaccine trial conducted in a resource-constrained setting

Open Access•Gwen Lemey, Ynke Larivière et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

INTRODUCTION: Clear guidelines to implement ancillary care (AC) in clinical trials conducted in resource-constrained settings are lacking. Here, we evaluate an AC policy developed for a vaccine trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and formulate policy recommendations. METHODS: To evaluate the AC policy, we performed a longitudinal cohort study, nested in an open-label, single-centre, randomised Ebola vaccine trial conducted among healthc…

  • Researchers’ responsibilities in resource-constrained settings

Open Access•Gwen Lemey, Trésor Zola et al.•ARTICLE•Research Ethics•2024

In this paper, we discuss challenges associated with implementing a policy for Ancillary Care (AC) for related and unrelated (serious) adverse events during an Ebola vaccine trial conducted in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Conducting clinical trials in resourceconstrained settings can raise context-related challenges that have implications for study participants’ health and wellbeing. During the Ebola vaccine study, three…

  • Implementation of a malaria prevention education intervention in Southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Zerihun Zerdo, Sibyl Anthieren et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Low attendance of parents in the training was the major challenge for the success of MPE. National malaria program should ensure the access to malaria prevention measures; and future studies using increased frequency of the intervention embedded with monitoring adherence to the intervention protocol shall be conducted to improve the gains from existing malaria interventions

  • Cost-Effectiveness of Peer-Delivered HIV Self-Tests for MSM in Uganda

Open Access•Stephen Okoboi, Barbara Castelnuovo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Introduction: Distribution of HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits through MSM peer networks is a novel and effective strategy to increase HIV testing coverage in this high-risk population. No study has evaluated the cost or cost effectiveness of peer distribution of HIVST strategies among MSM in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: From June to August 2018, we conducted a pilot study of secondary MSM peer HIVST kit distribution at The AIDS Support Organization…

  • Algorithm for the support of non-related (serious) adverse events in an Ebola vaccine trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Open Access•Gwen Lemey, Ynke Larivière et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Implementing an Ebola vaccine trial in a remote area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and being confronted with a dysfunctional health care system and acute unmet health needs of participants, ethical considerations were made regarding the ancillary care obligations of the sponsor and researchers. Spurred by the occurrence of non-related (serious) adverse events (NR-SAEs), the Universities of Antwerp and Kinshasa jointly developed a…

  • Correlates of knowledge of family planning among people living in fishing communities of Lake Victoria, Uganda

Open Access•Annet Nanvubya, Rhoda K Wanyenze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

FP awareness among people living in FCs of L. Victoria in Uganda is high. However, good knowledge about specific methods tends to be low. Correlates of knowledge of FP include gender, residence, marital status and sexual engagement

  • Knowledge and practices of general practitioners at district hospitals towards cervical cancer prevention in Burundi, 2015

Open Access•Zacharie Ndizeye, Davy Vanden Broeck et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2018

BACKGROUND: Well-organized screening and treatment programmes are effective to prevent Invasive Cervical Cancer (ICC) in LMICs. To achieve this, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the involvement of existing health personnel in casu doctors, nurses, midwives in ICC prevention. A necessary precondition is that health personnel have appropriate knowledge about ICC. Therefore, to inform policy makers and training institutions in Burundi,…

  • The Challenges of Research Informed Consent in Socio‐Economically Vulnerable Populations

Open Access•Marion Kalabuanga, Raffaella Ravinetto et al.•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2016

In medical research, the ethical principle of respect for persons is operationalized into the process of informed consent. The consent tools should be contextualized and adapted to the different socio‐cultural environment, especially when research crosses the traditional boundaries and reaches poor communities. We look at the challenges experienced in the malaria Quinact trial, conducted in the D emocratic R epublic of C ongo, and describe some l…

  • Effectiveness of educational outreach in infectious diseases management

Open Access•Martin Mbonye, Martin Kayitale Mbonye et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Effects of OSS on workload were not statistically significant. Significant OSS effects on facility performance across subgroups were heterogeneous. OSS supported MLP who diagnosed and treated patients to apply IMID knowledge. For other providers, OSS supported team work to manage emergency patients. This evidence on OSS effectiveness could inform interventions to improve health workers' capacity to deliver better quality infectious diseases care

  • Malaria policies versus practices, a reality check from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•Hypolite Muhindo Mavoko, Gillon Ilombe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

This study shows the discrepancy between malaria policies and the reality on the field in Kinshasa, regarding patients' health seeking behaviour and health professionals' practices. Consequently, the poor compliance to the policies may contribute to the genesis and spread of antimalarial drug resistance and also have a negative impact on the burden of the disease

  • Programme level implementation of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) use

Open Access•Daniel Kyabayinze, Daniel J Kyabayinze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

One-day training on the use of RDTs successfully provided adequate skill and competency among health workers to perform RDTs in fever case management at LLHF in a Uganda setting. The cost averaged at US$101 per health worker trained, with the main cost drivers being trainee travel and per diems. Given the good peer training noted in this study, there is need to explore the cost-effectiveness of a cascade training model for large scale implementat…
