Age-related variations in mental health and wellbeing during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially impacted mental health. This study explored age-related differences in the mental health and wellbeing of participants during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Secondary analyses of data from 21,106 participants collected between July and December 2020 across 152 countries was conducted. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the relationship between the de…
Standard of prevention for infectious diseases' prevention clinical trials during pandemics
Lessons from biomedical HIV prevention research indicate that standard of prevention packages evolve over time, and require active engagement of stakeholders and community advocates to define packages accept to community members and trial participants. Using COVID-19 prevention research as an example, this paper discusses the reasons why a standard of prevention package must be defined for infectious diseases prevention research, what the minimum…
Strengthening health systems to tackle oral diseases in Africa
Oral diseases remain a significant public health challenge in Africa. Despite their prevalence, oral health is often overlooked in national health agendas and universal health coverage frameworks. This manuscript explores the crucial role of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in strengthening health systems to address the growing oral health problem in Africa. A rapid review of the literature was conducted in datab…
Accelerating community health worker programmes
Community health workers (CHWs) are the critical elements of vibrant primary healthcare (PHC) services
Disparities in anti-Sars-CoV-2 reactivity according to vaccines administered in the era of omicron in Cameroon
With the advent of COVID-19, anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were a global health priority, but evidence on their significance within tropical settings remained limited. We sought to assess the distribution of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies according to vaccine status and types of vaccines administered in Cameroon during Omicron waves. A community based cross-sectional sero-survey was conducted from February-15 through July-31 2022 among individuals tested …

Current knowledge of human Mpox viral infection among healthcare workers in Cameroon calls for capacity-strengthening for pandemic preparedness
Introduction: An increased incidence of human Monkeypox (Mpox) cases was recently observed worldwide, including in Cameroon. To ensure efficient preparedness and interventions in the health system, we sought to assess the knowledge of Mpox's transmission, prevention, and response among healthcare workers (HCWs) in Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among HCWs in Cameroon using 21-item questions adapted from the Unite…

Urgent support mechanism
Delivering COVID-19 vaccines with 4–6 weeks shelf life remains one of Africa’s most pressing challenges. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) leadership recognised that COVID-19 vaccines donated to many African countries were at risk of expiry considering the short shelf life on delivery in the Member States and slow vaccine uptake rates. Thus, a streamlined rapid response system, the urgent support mechanism, was de…
XBB.1, BQ1.1 and atypical BA.4.6/XBB.1 recombinants predominate current Sars-CoV-2 Wavelets with flu-like symptoms in Cameroon
As of December 2022, Cameroon had observed a slight resurgence of COVID-19, raising concerns on genomic surveillance of related-SARS-CoV-2 variants under circulation. Following a laboratory-based survey, positive SARS-CoV-2 samples detected from December-2022 through March-2023 were processed for targeted sequencing at the Chantal BIYA International Reference Centre (CIRCB) in Yaoundé-Cameroon. From all positive cases detected, 13 were successful…

Factors Associated with Healthcare Utilization Among Adults in Saudi Arabia During the Covid-19 Pandemic
To investigate factors associated with healthcare utilization by adults in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Services utilization, we conducted logistic regressions to determine the relationship between predisposing factors (age, gender, education, employment status), need factors (critical medical needs), and enabling factors (insurance coverage, financial loss) on heal…
Social media information and its association with the adoption of Covid-19 preventive measures in four Latin American countries
Objective: The study aimed to assess the association between adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures and access to media information related to COVID-19. Methods: A multi-country, cross-sectional study using an online survey was conducted from June to December 2020. The sample included 1,457 participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The outcome variable was self-reported adherence to preventive measures (handwashing, social distan…

Factors Associated With Experiences of Fear, Anxiety, Depression, and Changes in Sleep Pattern During the Covid-19 Pandemic Among Adults in Nigeria
Background Multiple facets of the pandemic can be a source of fear, depression, anxiety and can cause changes in sleep patterns. The aim of this study was to identify health profiles and the COVID-19 pandemic related factors associated with fear, depression, anxiety and changes in sleep pattern in adults in Nigeria. Methods The data for this analysis was extracted from a cross-sectional online survey that collected information about mental health…
Covid-19 mortality rate and its associated factors during the first and second waves in Nigeria
COVID-19 mortality rate has not been formally assessed in Nigeria. Thus, we aimed to address this gap and identify associated mortality risk factors during the first and second waves in Nigeria. This was a retrospective analysis of national surveillance data from all 37 States in Nigeria between February 27, 2020, and April 3, 2021. The outcome variable was mortality amongst persons who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by Reverse-Transcriptase Poly…
Covid-19 preparedness
Considerations for stakeholder engagement and Covid ‐19 related clinical trials’ conduct in sub‐Saharan Africa
The aim of this study is to determine how stakeholder engagement can be adapted for the conduct of COVID ‐19‐related clinical trials in sub‐Saharan Africa. Nine essential stakeholder engagement practices were reviewed: formative research; stakeholder engagement plan; communications and issues management plan; protocol development; informed consent process; standard of prevention for vaccine research and standard of care for treatment research; po…

HIV status disclosure by Nigerian men who have sex with men and transgender women living with HIV
HIV status disclosure to sexual partners was uncommon among Nigerian MSM and TGW living with HIV but was associated with improved HIV care outcomes. Disclosure was not associated with substantially increased experiences of stigma. Strategies to encourage HIV status disclosure may improve HIV management outcomes in these highly-marginalized populations with a high burden of HIV infection
Cohort profile
This cohort describes the clinical and non-clinical profile of EPLHIV in Nigeria. We are following up the cohort to design and implement intervention programs, develop prognostic models to achieve better care outcomes for EPLHIV. This cohort would provide vital information for stakeholders in HIV prevention, care and treatment to understand the characteristics of EPLHIV

Individual and partnership characteristics associated with consistent condom use in a cohort of cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women in Nigeria
These findings suggest that individuals in relationships where partners were more open and encouraged safer sex were more likely to consistently use condoms. HIV prevention programs should consider leveraging communication to sexual partners to encourage condom use as this may support condom use with other sexual partners. Given sustained and growing HIV and STI epidemics among MSM and TGW, even with pre-exposure prophylaxis scale-up, it is cruci…
