Neurodevelopment of children exposed and unexposed to Zika virus in pregnancy
This article aims to assess the neurodevelopment of children with and without in utero Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure, in the absence of microcephaly at birth, and to explore social and biological factors associated with develop- mental outcomes. Cross-sectional analysis of 172 children (94 ZIKV-exposed, 78 unexposed), aged 11-39 months, were evaluated using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. . Outcomes were classified as delayed (
Characterization of 843 children with Zika-related microcephaly in the first three years of life
One of the main gaps in characterizing the congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) up to now is the small number of participants in individual studies. Pooling the data together overcomes the sample size-related limitations of individual studies and provides an opportunity for investigating heterogeneity between studies and, as appropriate, to better characterize the CZS . This study aims to describe adverse anthropometric, clinical, and neuroimaging outc…
Socio-ecological Determinants of Detectable Viremia among Pregnant People Living with HIV in South Brazil
Pregnant patients living with HIV are a priority group for the recruitment into the HIV healthcare cascade to prevent adverse maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Understanding the structural, interpersonal, and individual factors that are associated with detectable HIV viremia is of importance to guide outreach and intervention priorities. This was a retrospective cohort study of pregnant patients living with HIV who delivered from January 1, …
Influence of trauma on longitudinal association between depressive symptoms and use of alcohol and cannabis among young people
Study findings highlight the longitudinal association between trauma and both depression and substance use. This suggests the potential utility of trauma-focused interventions among vulnerable youth with one or both of these issues. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
Pregnancy rates and clinical outcomes among women living with HIV enrolled in HPTN 052
HPTN 052 was a multi-country clinical trial of cART for preventing heterosexual HIV-1 transmission. The study allowed participation of pregnant women and provided access to cART and contraceptives. We explored associations between pregnancy and clinical measures of HIV disease stage and progression. Of 869 women followed for 5.70 (SD = 1.62) years, 94.7% were married/cohabitating, 96% initiated cART, and 76.3% had >2 past pregnancies. Of 337 wome…
Chlamydia trachomatis Screening and Treatment in Pregnancy to Reduce Adverse Pregnancy and Neonatal Outcomes
Chlamydial trachomatis infection has been associated with adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes such as premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth, low birth weight, conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in infants. This review evaluates existing literature to determine potential benefits of antenatal screening and treatment of C. trachomatis in preventing adverse outcomes. A literature search revealed 1824 studies with 156 full-text articles review…
Neurodevelopment in the third year of life in children with antenatal Zikv-exposure
We report cognitive, language and motor neurodevelopment, assessed by the Bayley-III test, in 31 non-microcephalic children at age 3 with PCR-confirmed maternal Zika virus exposure (Rio de Janeiro, 2015–2016). Most children had average neurodevelopmental scores, however, 8 children (26%) presented delay in some domain. Language was the most affected: 7 children (22.6%) had a delay in this domain (2 presenting severe delay). Moderate delay was det…
The Effect of Partnership Presence and Support on HIV Viral Suppression Among Serodiscordant Partnered and Single Heterosexual HIV-Positive Individuals in Brazil

Filling the Gaps for Enhancing the Effectiveness of Community-Based Programs Combining Treatment and Prevention of Child Malnutrition
Rainbow SFPs provide an integrated community-based approach for the treatment and prevention of child malnutrition in Zambia, with its effectiveness significantly enhanced after the gaps in activities were filled
Antiretroviral Therapy for the Prevention of HIV-1 Transmission
BACKGROUND: An interim analysis of data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 052 trial showed that antiretroviral therapy (ART) prevented more than 96% of genetically linked infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in serodiscordant couples. ART was then offered to all patients with HIV-1 infection (index participants). The study included more than 5 years of follow-up to assess the durability of such therapy for …
Viral Suppression and Resistance in a Cohort of Perinatally-HIV Infected (PHIV+) Pregnant Women
Our objective was to describe viral suppression and antiretroviral (ARV) resistance mutations in an ongoing cohort of perinatally-infected HIV+ (PHIV+) pregnant women. Descriptive analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0. From 2011 to 2014, we followed 22 PHIV+ pregnant women. Median age at prenatal entry was 19 years (Interquartile range (IQR) 17.6-21.0); 86% had an AIDS diagnosis; 81% had disclosed their HIV status to partner 11. The median age a…
Community-Based Management of Child Malnutrition in Zambia
(1) BACKGROUND: Supplementary feeding programs (SFPs) are effective in the community-based treatment of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and prevention of severe acute malnutrition (SAM); (2) METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on a sample of 1266 Zambian malnourished children assisted from 2012 to 2014 in the Rainbow Project SFPs. Nutritional status was evaluated according to WHO/Unicef methodology. We performed univariate and multivar…
Effects of early versus delayed initiation of antiretroviral treatment on clinical outcomes of HIV-1 infection
HIV testing of male partners of pregnant women in Porto Alegre, Brazil
Pregnant women have a significantly higher risk of HIV acquisition during gestation than their non-pregnant counterparts due to behavioral and biological factors. Acute seroconversion during gestation results in increased HIV mother-to-child transmission rates and has been identified as a major public health challenge. In order to address potential HIV seroconversion in our pregnant patients, we conducted a prospective cohort study to evaluate th…
Nutritional Rehabilitation of HIV-Exposed Infants in Malawi
Infant malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa is a public health priority and a challenge in high HIV prevalence areas. The Drug Resources Enhancement Against AIDS and Malnutrition program, with multiple medical centers in Sub-Saharan Africa, developed an innovative intervention for the surveillance and control of malnutrition. In a pilot initiative, 36 HIV-exposed children were evaluated at baseline upon presentation for malnutrition and at six mont…
Prevention of HIV-1 Infection with Early Antiretroviral Therapy
BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy that reduces viral replication could limit the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in serodiscordant couples. METHODS: In nine countries, we enrolled 1763 couples in which one partner was HIV-1-positive and the other was HIV-1-negative; 54% of the subjects were from Africa, and 50% of infected partners were men. HIV-1-infected subjects with CD4 counts between 350 and 550 cells per cubic m…
