Patient, family and clinician priorities for critical care research in Asia and Africa
BACKGROUND: This James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priority Setting Partnership aimed to identify and prioritise unanswered questions important to adult patients, their families and health professionals with lived experience of critical care across Asia and Africa. METHODS: Modified Delphi techniques were used to generate suggestions using an online survey. Following verification, literature review and content analysis, these suggestions were iteratively…
Cost-effectiveness of three screening strategies for atrial fibrillation in Sri Lanka
INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) are crucial to reduce AF-related complications and associated healthcare costs. In low-resource settings, digital health technologies could help achieve this; however, costs of different screening strategies are key for policy change. METHODS: This decision-tree model representing the Sri Lankan public health system perspective used prevalence data from a community-based cros…
Hospital burden of critical illness across global settings
INTRODUCTION: The burden of critical illness may have been underestimated. Previous analyses have used data from intensive care units (ICUs) only, and there is a lack of evidence about where in hospitals critically ill patients receive care. This study aims to determine the burden of critical illness among adult inpatients across hospitals in different global settings. METHODS: We performed a prospective, observational, hospital-based, point prev…
The burden of respiratory conditions in the emergency department of Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania in the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic
Globally, respiratory diseases cause 10 million deaths every year. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the burden of respiratory illness increased and led to significant morbidity and mortality in both high- and low-income countries. This study assessed the burden and trend of respiratory conditions among patients presenting to the emergency department of Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania and compared with national COVID-19 data to determine if thi…
Inequalities in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its risk factors in Sri Lanka
The results show a variable relationship between socioeconomic status and prevalence of diabetes and its risk factors. The inequalities in the prevalence of diabetes and risk factors vary depending on gender and the measures used. The study suggests that measures to prevent diabetes should focus on targeting specific factors based on sex and socioeconomic status. The priority target areas for interventions should include prevention of obesity (BM…
A survey on socioeconomic determinants of diabetes mellitus management in a lower middle income setting
Diabetes mellitus patients, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, are poorly managed and have high rates of complications. Most depend on the private healthcare system with overall poor access to care in the estate sector
A cross sectional survey on social, cultural and economic determinants of obesity in a low middle income setting
There is a social gradient in all three obesity categories with higher prevalence observed in the more educated, urban, high income and high social status segments of society. The higher socioeconomic groups are still at a higher risk of all types of obesity despite other public health indicators such as maternal and infant mortality displaying an established social gradient
