  • More than a Means

    Open Access•A L Johnson•ARTICLE•Society and Mental Health•2026

Suicide by firearm is a pressing public health concern, directing attention to the relationship between guns and suicide mortality. This article introduces a novel theory of the role of guns in suicide, positing that beyond access, gun culture—the shared social meaning of guns—independently corresponds with higher rates of suicide by firearm among white men. Using data from the American National Election Survey (ANES) 2020 Time Series Study, I em…

  • An exploratory analysis of self-diagnosis on Reddit

    Open Access•A L Johnson•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2026

Online self-diagnosis is an increasingly common phenomenon. Its ubiquity counters the expectation that people will generally avoid stigmatizing labels like mental illness diagnoses. Yet social media may provide a space for users to anonymously “try on” labels without fear of stigma or social sanction. This article uses exploratory qualitative analysis to examine self-diagnosis on the social media platform Reddit. I document how self-diagnosis is …

  • What's Hard Is Yet to Come

    Open Access•Emily K Carian, A L Johnson•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2025•Referências: 17

Drawing on 71 interviews with 20 respondents across four waves before and after their graduation, we explore whether and how the transition from college to career can lead to new experiences with and understandings of gender inequality for elite graduates of color. While all respondents experienced or witnessed gender inequality and recognized it as such, they differed on whether and how these experiences shaped their explanations for gender ineq…

  • Mental Illness and the Resilience of Deviance

    Open Access•A L Johnson•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2025•Referências: 51

This article deploys mental health and illness as a strategic case study to explore whether and how cultural beliefs about deviance respond to dramatic cultural change. Through a combination of topic modeling and targeted close reading applied to a corpus of more than 100,000 articles from a diverse set of newspapers, I document Americans' understandings of the relationship between mental illness and deviance between 1980 and 2020. Despite widesp…

  • Hiding in Sight

    Open Access•A L Johnson•ARTICLE•Canberra Anthropology•2024•Referências: 23

The article explores intersecting conceptual and physical fields through an ethnography of acts of lukne, or hiding, performed by women during seasonal grass-cutting excursions in a small town located in Nepal’s Far Western Tarai. Women’s physical work performed in agricultural fields, and especially grass-cutting excursions, afforded possibilities for women to construct private worlds as spaces of female agency. As the article unpacks the locali…

  • Teaching for a Data-Driven Future

    Open Access•A L Johnson, Rebecca D Gleit•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 23

Despite the centrality of data analysis to the discipline, sociology departments are currently falling short of teaching both undergraduate and graduate students crucial computing and statistical software skills. We argue that sociology instructors must intentionally and explicitly teach computing skills alongside statistical concepts to prepare their students for participation in a data-driven world. We illuminate foundational concepts for compu…

  • Changes in Mental Health and Treatment, 1997-2017

    Open Access•A L Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2021•Citada por: 4•Referências: 48

Mental health outcomes have shown dramatic changes over the past half-century, yet these trends are still underexplored. I utilize an age-period-cohort analysis of the National Health Interview Survey from 1997 to 2017 (N = 627,058) to disentangle trends in mental health outcomes in the United States over time. Specifically, I leverage the contrast between reported psychological distress and rates of mental health treatment to isolate which has c…

  • Agrarian Change and Agricultural Development

Open Access•Samara Brock, Alder Keleman et al.•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

In the late nineteenth century evolutionary theories shaped anthropological thinking about society's development and the diffusion of innovations like agricultural production, which was framed as a natural progression from hunter‐gatherer lifeways. Cultural ecology models of the 1950s looked at functional relationships between the environment and adaptation, interpreting cultural traits as homeostatic systems that ensured equilibrium between peop…

  • Decision Making About Nonparental Child Care by Fathers

    Open Access•Katherine K Rose, A L Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2018•Citada por: 2•Referências: 41

While research exists on maternal preferences and decisions about child care, fathers are an underrepresented population in this literature. In an effort to fill this gap, this study examines the types of child care preferred, the level of involvement in the decision-making process, as well as the importance of certain characteristics of nonparental care in a sample of 130 fathers of children under the age of 6 years (6.2% of whom did not live wi…

  • Families of the Forest

    A L Johnson, Allen Johnson•BOOK•Families of the Forest•2003

The idea of a family level society, discussed and disputed by anthropologists for nearly half a century, assumes moving, breathing form in Families of the Forest. According to Allen Johnson’s deft ethnography, the Matsigenka people of southeastern Peru cannot be understood or appreciated except as a family level society; the family level of sociocultural integration is for them a lived reality. Under ordinary circumstances, the largest social uni…
