  • Arsenic in drinking water, hair, and prevalence of arsenicosis in Perak, Malaysia

Open Access•Nurfatehar Ramly, Husna Maizura Ahmad Mahir et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Arsenic is a carcinogen element that occurs naturally in our environment. Humans can be exposed to arsenic through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. However, the most significant exposure pathway is via oral ingestion. Therefore, a comparative cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the local arsenic concentration in drinking water and hair. Then, the prevalence of arsenicosis was evaluated to assess the presence of the disea…

  • Covid-19 Epidemic in Malaysia

Open Access•Jamal Hisham Hashim, Mohammad Adam Adman et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest communicable disease outbreak to have hit Malaysia since the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed 34,644 people or 1% of the population of the then British Malaya. In 1999, the Nipah virus outbreak killed 105 Malaysians, while the SARS outbreak of 2003 claimed only 2 lives. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed over 100 Malaysian lives. There were two waves of the COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. First wave of 22 …

  • Developing a qualitative environmental health risk matrix and assessment tool for Malaysia

Jamal Hisham Hashim, Soo Chen Kwan et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2021

This is a project under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) to develop a qualitative environmental health risk assessment (EHRA) tool to be adopted at the sub-district,district, and state levels, in establishing an Environmental Health Risk Inventory (EHRI) for Malaysia. We developed the EHRA framework and tool based on the global best practices. In the framework, we included an exposure rating based on population density and vulnerability in a…

  • The Effects of Indoor Pollutants Exposure on Allergy and Lung Inflammation

Open Access•Khairul Nizam Mohd Isa, Zainuddin Hashim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The findings indicated that the exposure to PM 2.5 and NO 2 was likely associated with the degranulation of eosinophils and neutrophils, following the activation mechanisms that led to the inflammatory reactions

  • Trip characteristics as the determinants of intention to shift to rail transport among private motor vehicle users in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Open Access•Soo Chen Kwan, Rosnah Sutan et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2018

  • Spatial occurrence of dengue fever and its relationship with land use in Selangor, Malaysia

Open Access•Haidar Rizal Toha, Jamal Hisham Hashim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Background Dengue fever has a profound impact in Malaysia, and globally, it has a strong potential to spread to new territories as a consequence of human activities and climate change that modify the environment. Environmental factors can affect the disease epidemic via their influence on vector’s habitat and propagation. Among the economic costs borne in dealing with this matter related to epidemic identification and vector surveillance. The rel…

  • Electrocardiographic wave variation among adults in Malaysia

Open Access•Mohd Hasni Jaáfar, Jamal Hisham Hashim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Background Cardiovascular disease is among the main causes of morbidity and mortality in adult population in Malaysia. Since 10 years ago, it became the most important reason for hospitalisation in government hospitals. Non-invasive 12-lead resting electrocardiograph (ECG) has been recognised internationally as a simple, yet reliable surveillance tool to detect any cardiomyopathy condition. The objective of the study was to determine the varietie…

  • The implications of climatic changes on food and water-borne diseases in Malaysia

Open Access•Noor Artika Hassan, Jamal Hisham Hashim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Background Climate change has been recognised as the most pressing environmental problem humans will face in the 21st century. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.74°C between 1905 and 2005, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4.5°C over the next 100 years. In Malaysia, observed surface temperature data for the last four decades estimates an increase of between 2.7 to 4.…

  • Occupational noise exposure in manufacturing industries in Malaysia

Open Access•Noraita Tahir, Syed Mohamed Aljunid et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Background Manufacturing sector accounts for 18.1% of the total employed persons in Malaysia, which is known for the utilisation of noisy machinery to establish output. Even though it is compulsory for employers to notify any hearing loss cases to the authority annually, there is still scarcity of occupational hearing loss cases. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the total number of workers exposed to occupational noise among workers in man…

  • Prevalence of asthma and level of fractional exhaled nitrogen oxide among Malaysian school children

    Open Access•Aminnuddin Ma’pol, Aminnuddin Ma'pol et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Materials and methods The use of FeNO measurements in clinical practice has been increasingly accepted based on a number of theoretical and practical factors. It is not only a user friendly, portable and non-invasive assessment tool, but is also able to detect inflammatory airway changes in children exposed to atmospheric pollutions. The study respondents were randomly selected from secondary school students in Terengganu, Malaysia. A questionnai…

  • Health systems, policies and infant mortality in developing countries

Open Access•David Baguma, Jamal Hisham Hashim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Methods The secondary data on infant mortality was obtained on countries in Eastern Africa, Western Europe and Southern Asian countries between 1950 and 2010 expressed as deaths per 1,000 births. Countries in Western Europe were used for comparison purposes. The data also included inpatients (admissions and deaths in 2007) of water-related diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea, in Eastern Africa (i.e., Uganda). Nonlinear regression modelling was…

  • Epidemiological pattern of acute respiratory infection among under-fives in Almazar Aljanoubi District -South Jordan

    Open Access•Ibrahim AlNawaiseh, Ibrahim Al-nawaiseh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Background Acute respiratory diseases are the most common international human illnesses. Acute respiratory infection (ARI) in under five year old children represent the most common health problem in paediatric practice all over the world. It is reported that all children under five years suffer from 6-8 respiratory infections annually, which represent about 50% of all preschooler illnesses. The aim of the present study was to assess the epidemiol…
