Technological Change and Religious Unification
The phrase “religious unification” in its title does not mean that this paper is about ecumenism or that it is a plea for religious unity. It is not intended as a contribution to piety or to religious education, but to theological clarification. That is, I use the word “unification” in its intellectual sense, not in a practical or political sense

A COMMENT ON THE COMMENTS EMMANUEL G. MESTHENE I am grateful to all three commentators for the time and attention they have devoted to my essay, and to Mr. Drucker in particular for his perceptive appreciation of the spirit and focus of the Harvard Program on Technology and Society. The purpose of this comment, thus, is not to deny the compliment of serious criticism but to clarify a few points of fact and interpretation and to respond to some of…

Some General Implications of the Research of the Harvard University Program on Technology and Society
While a good deal of research is aimed at discerning the particular effects of technological change on industry, government, or education, systematic inquiry devoted to seeing these effects together and to assessing their implications for contemporary society as a whole is relatively recent and does not enjoy the strong methodology and richness of theory and data that mark more established fields of scholarship. It therefore often has to contend …

An Experiment in Understanding
An earlier article about the Harvard University Program on Technology and Society described its establishment 1964, and indicated how it was undertaking to inquire in depth into the effects of rapid technological change on the economy, on public policies, and on the character of the society, as well as into the reciprocal effects of social change on the nature, dimension, and directions of scientific and technological developments.1 A forthcoming…

On Understanding Change
The Harvard University Program on Technology and Society was set up in June 1964, under a $5,000,000 grant from the IBM Corporation, to undertake an inquiry in depth into the effects of rapid technological change on the economy, on public policies, and on the character of the society, as well as into the reciprocal effects of social change on the nature, dimension, and directions of scientific and technological developments. A ten-year program, i…

On the Need for a Scientific Ethic
The use that the scientist makes of his principles is well known. In the normal course of scientific investigation, a hypothesis which explains some physical phenomenon adequately in every particular, but which runs counter to, say, the laws of inertia, cannot be held without further experimentation. Such experimentation must continue until the irreconcilability of the hypothesis with the laws is resolved. In most cases the hypothesis will fail t…
