Mujeres que no vuelven
The article examines how health vulnerabilities are shaped among a group of women living in segregated neighborhoods. It analyzes the underlying reasons for gaps in theircervical cancer screening, as reconstructed through ethnography and other methods. Drawing on studies of social inequality, anthropological theories, collective health, and decolonial feminisms, this study identifies the consequences of violence that permeate these women’s social…
Keeping unsafe at home
Risk researchers have long acknowledged different interpretations and practices towards risk, and the disputes that develop across these differences. The aim of this article is to explore the drivers of disputes over meanings on risks and consequent social practices in small artisanal-scale fishing communities in rural Argentina. Local fisherman and their families refused to leave homes at risk of imminent collapse due to a geological disaster in…
Collaborative ethnography and a call for pluralism and dialogic knowledge in health equity debates and global cancer research culture
Scholars in medical anthropology note that, despite more than 25 years of anthropological studies on cancer, much of this scholarship remains marginal in mainstream public health approaches. This paper examines social practices, biases, and unnoticed assumptions in mainstream global health research culture that prevents anthropology from having a more influential role in cancer research and policy agendas. It focuses on the day-to-day, ordinary, …
Volcano
This study analyzes the dynamics in which structural vulnerabilities are shaped and expressed in the day-to-day lives of people making a living from a garbage dump in Argentina. It is a mixed methods case study, qualitative driven with a collaborative cycle (2016-2021). The study is embedded in medical anthropology, social epidemiology and Latin America Social Medicine, with the focus on the ways people respond to inequalities locally. The findin…
Ethics in Practice and Ethnography
Ethical issues are an essential part of research and need to be considered throughout the process and in its aftermath, especially when including vulnerable groups. This Field Notes revisits some ethical tensions that emerged during fieldwork with a 'vulnerable population'-a group of waste-pickers and their families-and links these to specific avenues for further thinking within ethical frameworks. I reflect on mistakes, omissions, and blunders c…
Apresentação do Dossiê 9
Blurred logics behind frontline staff decision-making for cancer control in Argentina
In this article we approach socioeconomic inequities in cancer by examining a particular dimension of health care: how health services attending patients with cancer set priorities for their daily activities. By using qualitative ethnographic data, we explore logics underlying how practitioners make priority-setting decisions regarding cancer prevention and care. We found four main types of accounts: accounts based on macro social inequalities, a…
Methodological and Ethical Dilemmas Encountered During Field Research of Family Violence Experienced by Adolescent Women in Buenos Aires
The purpose of this article is to examine some obstacles and dilemmas related to methodological strategies and ethical considerations that arose during the fieldwork of research focused on family violence during the stages of pregnancy and childbirth in adolescent females in Buenos Aires during 2007. From this study, we are able to contribute some reflections in the arena of qualitative and mixed methods inquiries. Some of the problematic topics …
