Race
The studies examined in this part of the book focus primarily on racial oppression. The terms ‘race’, ‘racism’, ‘black’, ‘Afro-Caribbean’, ‘Asian’ are all, of course, politically charged and dynamic concepts. The lack of any clearly non-repressive signifiers ( Bulmer, 1986 ) means that the selection of terminology is both transitory and to some extent arbitrary. When referring to other commentators, and in the studies reviewed below, the terminol…
Craft on the Dirt Circuit
This article considers the significance of the “dirt circuit,” the cyclical tour of Renaissance Festivals in the eastern US state of Maryland that craft vendors and performers take each year, as a network through which craft community is formed. Through participant research and onsite interviews at the 2021 Maryland Renaissance Festival, I examine how the closed-world structure of the festival offers a sense of continuity and community, as well a…
Archaeological Investigations at the Church of Saint Mary, Princes Risborough, 2005 and 2011
An evaluation (2005) and a watching brief (2011) were carried out at Saint Mary’s church, Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire by John Moore Heritage Services. These investigations retrieved finds of Iron Age and Roman date, and, importantly, identified a number of earlier structural phases, which enables a major re-interpretation of the development of the church. Previous interpretations of the church had suggested a simple nave and chancel struc…
Blood and Faith
This work is not about the forging of Muslim Spain in general, but as the subtitle indeed states, about the final period of Morisco history, 1492 to 1614. As Carr tells us (p. 6) ‘There is a vast scholarly literature [historical, anthropological, etc.] on the Moriscos [...] This book is not intended to contribute to these efforts or to break new scholarly ground. Its aim is more humble: to bring the story of the Moriscos to readers who may never …
Defining Boundaries in al-Andalus
Professor Safran titles her study Defining Boundaries in al-Andalus. In case other readers are as uncertain as I was as to how that title should be interpreted, let me say she tells us very clearly that this is, ‘a book about Islamic rule over Christians and Jews in medieval Iberia’ (p. 4), and at its heart is ‘an experiment in interpretation of Islamic legal texts’. Not, then, a study of geographical or military frontier demarcation, except inci…

From Al-Andalus to Khurasan
We are told that ‘The articles in this volume are based on papers given at the Second International Society for Arabic Papyrology (ISAP) conference’ held in Granada in 2004, ‘born of the happy intersection of ISAP's aims with those of the Granadan Arabic document project’. The documents studied thus fall into two quite distinct chronological and geographical groups. We open with four papers on the documents of Nasrid Granada (pp. 3–80), and then …

Los Almohades
Of the nine-centuries long history of Muslim presence in the Iberian peninsula (711–1614), it is not surprising that certain periods attract more attention than others. We want to know about the initial conquest of 711, the great days of the emirate/caliphate of Cordova, and how the story ended—the circumstances under which the political independence of al-Andalus came to be lost in 1492. The intervening four and a half centuries may be less fami…

In the course of this seminar we have learnt, for example from Dr. Latham's paper, how fruitful it is in considering problems of cultural and linguistic contact to focus on one point, even if that point is only the size of the top of a pimple. I am going to do just the opposite, and to cover a very wide area, and I am conscious of the risks which I run in dispersing my attention in this way, but I hope that what I will say will give us the opport…
