  • LiDAR Applications in Archaeology

Open Access•G Vinci, Federica Vanzani et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025

In the last two decades, the analysis of data derived from LiDAR (light detection and ranging) technology has dramatically changed the investigation and documentation of past cultural landscapes, sometimes revealing monumental architectures and settlement systems totally unknown before. Despite the exponential uptick of case studies, an extensive review of LiDAR applications in archaeology is so far missing. Here, we present a systematic survey o…

  • Bronze Age monumental earthworks of the Friuli Plain (NE Italy)

    Open Access•G Vinci, Federica Vanzani•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Referências: 38

In this study, we use high-resolution data from airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) acquisitions to comprehensively analyse late prehistoric earthwork structures in the alluvial plain of Friuli (NE Italy). By comparing LiDAR-derived models with direct topographic surveys of the structures carried out in the past we provide a detailed overview of the main characteristics of the structures. The new documentation, including Digital Terrain …

  • The legacy of the Roman pottery production in the alluvial landscape in Italy

Open Access•Federica Vanzani, Alessandro Fontana et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Referências: 47

The topography of alluvial plains in Europe has been strongly affected and overprinted by different diachronic human activities, and modern land use has reworked geomorphological and archaeological traces, often hindering the reconstruction of past landscapes and the assessment of ancient environmental impacts. In this work, set in the distal Venetian-Friulian Plain, in northeastern Italy, we took advantage of the presence of the last remnants of…

  • The Roman conquest beyond Aquileia (II-I centuries BC)

Open Access•Boštjan Leharnar, Karl Ströbel et al.•BOOK•The Roman conquest beyond…•2023

The increase in archaeological knowledge sheds new light on the presence of the Roman army and conflict archaeology in the Caput Adriae region and on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. The nine contributions by 19 authors from four countries (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria) summarise the historical, epigraphic and archaeological evidence. The main part of the book is devoted to the northern Adriatic and its hinterland in the 2nd and 1st…

  • Beached swords from Marano Lagoon (northern Adriatic) reveal ancient land–sea connections and recent coastal evolution

Open Access•G Vinci, Alessandro Fontana et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

Depositional and erosional processes, subsidence and sea‐level changes have strongly modified the coastal landscape of northern Adriatic lagoons. Such rapid transformations have induced significant consequences on human settlements and, thus, on the archaeological visibility of the area, still largely unexplored. We present here six metal swords fortuitously retrieved by fishermen over the last decades in front of the barrier islands of Marano La…

  • Prehistoric Stone Disks from Entrances and Cemeteries of North-Eastern Adriatic Hillforts

    Open Access•F Bernardini, G Vinci et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2022

The paper presents a group of four, approximately 0.5m large, stone disks from entrances or cemeteries of two protohistoric hillforts of north-eastern Adriatic. The disks, having a sparse chronology with the exception of one dated to the Middle Bronze Age, show flat and plain surfaces or covered with sub-circular depressions. One disk shows two larger cup-marks at the centre of both faces. They are interpreted as ritual artefacts based on the ass…

  • Palaeopathological Study of the Mompaderno Cranium (Croatian Istria) Reveals Interpersonal Violence during Early Bronze Age

    Open Access•G Vincenti, G Vinci et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 38

The Mompaderno cranium was found in 1883 at Baderna/Mompaderno in Croatian Istria. It was suspected to date from the Mesolithic or Neolithic period, but radiocarbon analyses, performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) on collagen extracted from two teeth, have provided an age range of 2,202–1928 cal. BC, which corresponds to the Early Bronze Age in the investigated region. Macroscopic observations and X‐ray micro‐tomography (micro‐CT) of th…

  • Grociana piccola

Open Access•F Bernardini, Jana Horvat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

Recent investigations at Grociana piccola, a site in northeastern Italy consisting of two sub-rectangular fortifications, offer the rare opportunity to investigate Early Roman military architecture outside the Iberian peninsula. Excavations have revealed an inner rubble masonry rampart dated to the 2nd c. BCE by associated pottery, mainly amphora remains. This date suggests that the fortification was in use during the first Roman conquest and/or …

  • Protohistoric pastoral landscape in northern Istria revealed by airborne LiDAR

  • Archaeological landscape in central northern Istria (Croatia) revealed by airborne LiDAR

  • Geo-archaeology of the Grozzana area (N–E Italy)

    Open Access•G Vinci, F Bernardini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

The extensive analysis of remote-sensed data (among which ALS-derived images) and fieldwork carried out in the Trieste Karst (N–E Italy) have shed light on archaeological landscapes largely unknown until recent years. The chronological definition of this complex palimpsest was based on the collection of findings associated to the archeological evidence, shape and orientation of detected structures and stratigraphic relations among features. This …

  • Lagoonal settlements and relative sea level during Bronze Age in Northern Adriatic

    Open Access•Alessandro Fontana, G Vinci et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Reconstructing the protohistoric landscape of Trieste Karst (north-eastern Italy) through airborne LiDAR remote sensing

    Open Access•G Vinci, F Bernardini•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

  • A major depression of psychogenic origin in a five-year-old

    Aldo Giancotti, G Vinci•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1986•Referências: 6

The case of a 5-year-old child who developed a major depressive episode in the course of psychotherapy is presented. This episode, as well as a previous psychiatric crisis, seemed of psychogenic nature. A psychodynamic interpretation is offered, emphasizing the adaptive nature of depression
