Childhood obesity is a major public health problem. An association between obesity and dental caries, the most prevalent disease of childhood, has been identified. One explanation for the association is that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and frequent snacking on carbohydrate-rich foods are common risk factors for development of both obesity and caries. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has been at the forefront of national effo…

The Maryland oral health summit
The following is a summary of a conference held to review changes and challenges to oral health in Maryland and nationwide and discuss priorities in implementing a new 5-year Maryland Oral Health Plan. News of the death in 2007 of a 12-year-old Maryland boy, Deamonte Driver, from an untreated dental infection that had spread to his brain shocked the nation and spurred the state of Maryland to immediate action. Potential to improve oral health care through evidence, protocols, and payment models
Evidence-based health care aims to utilize the best available evidence from scientific methods and apply this evidence to clinical and public health practice. Evidence of the benefits and risks of treatment is derived from randomized controlled clinical trials, systematic reviews, and expert panels. Evidence-based clinical parameters and guidelines should foster the best health outcomes for individuals or populations at reduced costs. By incorpor…
Dedication
This Special Issue is dedicated to the memory of Deamonte Driver and Captain John P. Rossetti. Deamonte Driver was a 12-year-old boy from Prince George's County, Maryland whose life was needlessly cut short by an untreated dental infection. His dental problems may have been avoided had there been a system in place to provide families with evidence-based educational and preventive services. His tragic death mobilized Maryland to take aggressive an…
Introduction to Special Issue

The state has responded with actions based on evidence and lessons learned locally and nationally. However, Maryland is also a state that recognizes the need to make further improvements and the critical importance of continued vigilance. It is in this context that this special i…
Effect of Mutans Streptococcal Colonization on Plaque Formation and Regrowth in Young Children – A Brief Communication
This study suggests that the presence of plaque on the anterior teeth of young children is consistent and related to MS colonization
Creating Partnerships for Improving Oral Health of Low‐income Children
Colonization of Mutans Streptococci in 8‐ to 15‐month‐old Children
This study suggests that prevention of MS colonization in some populations may need to be initiated prior to the child's first birthday
The Association of Early Dental Caries Patterns with Caries Incidence in Preschool Children
Dental caries presentation in 3- to 4-year-old children can identify those children and tooth surfaces that will be at the greatest risk for future caries development
Temporal Changes in Dental Caries Levels and Patterns in a Native American Preschool Population
Objectives : The purposes of this study were to assess current dental caries experience and levels of mutans streptococci in Apache children in 1993 and to determine how caries levels and patterns were different from 15 years before. Methods : Four‐year‐old Head Start children ( n =127) were examined for dental caries and sampled for salivary mutans streptococci in 1993. Dental caries information on 113 4‐year‐old children from the same location …
Dental Caries Prevalence and Treatment among Navajo Preschool Children
Most children in this population may be considered at risk for developing caries. This Navajo preschool population has perhaps the earliest caries onset, among the highest caries prevalence, and among the highest level of treatment of any reported population
