  • High-resolution analysis of the varved succession at Crawford lake across the base of the proposed Crawfordian stage and Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Francine Mg Mccarthy, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2025•Citada por: 3•Referências: 39

Four years after the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) voted to work toward defining the Anthropocene series/epoch with a base in the mid-20th C, the varved sediments of Crawford Lake (Milton, ON, Canada) were selected as the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate. The initial major rise in activity of 239 + 240 Pu had been selected as the primary chronostratigraphic marker to define the base of the Anthropocene, but the pre…

  • The varved succession of Crawford Lake, Milton, Ontario, Canada as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Francine Mg Mccarthy, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Citada por: 17•Referências: 41

An annually laminated succession in Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada is proposed for the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to define the Anthropocene as a series/epoch with a base dated at 1950 CE. Varve couplets of organic matter capped by calcite precipitated each summer in alkaline surface waters reflect environmental change at global to local scales. Spheroidal carbonaceous particles and nitrogen isotopes record an increase in…

  • Late-Holocene diatom community response to climate driven chemical changes in a small, subarctic lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Paul B Hamilton, Scott J Hutchinson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Referências: 2

The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecologic…

  • Siliceous algae response to the “Great Acceleration” of the mid-20th century in Crawford Lake (Ontario, Canada)

Open Access•Cale Ac Gushulak, Matthew Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2021•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

Diatom and chrysophyte assemblages from varved sediments of meromictic Crawford Lake, Ontario record major environmental changes resulting from spatially broadening anthropogenic environmental stressors related to the “Great Acceleration” in the mid-20th century. Biannual assessment of diatom and chrysophyte assemblages over the last ~200 years allowed for rate of change analysis between adjacent samples that increased substantially during the mi…

  • Reconstruction of Holocene hydroclimatic variability in subarctic treeline lakes using lake sediment grain-size end-members

    Open Access•Andrew L Macumber, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Referências: 4

Current climate trends are expected to result in the northward expansion of the subarctic treeline leading to changes in vegetation cover and permafrost distribution, as they did during the Holocene Climate Optimum when the treeline was 150 km north of its current position. The impacts of these changes on the region’s hydrology are still poorly understood. The grain-size distributions of treeline lake sediments provide an important proxy related …

  • A Holocene paleoclimate reconstruction for eastern Canada based on δ 18 O cellulose of Sphagnum mosses from Mer Bleue Bog

    Open Access•Hafida El Bilali, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

We present a ~9200 yr high-resolution oxygen isotope record of plant cellulose (δ 18 O cel ) from the peat deposits of Mer Bleue Bog, Ontario and apply it as a proxy for paleotemperature reconstruction in Eastern Canada. The results show that δ 18 O cel of Sphagnum follows the general pattern of the Northern Hemisphere reconstructed paleotemperature record for the last 2000 years at a ratio of ~2‰δ 18 O cel /°C. The δ 18 O cel record of ombrotrop…

  • The Ethics of Government Debt

    Robert T Patterson•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•1955

When repudiation is forced upon a nation by events and conditions beyond its control no question of ethics is involved. A country engaged in a war that has drained away its resources and impoverished it, or a subjected country ruthlessly exploited by its conquerors, may be forced to repudiate its debt for want of means to support it. This is the public equivalent of honorable bankruptcy in private life. WTien, however, ignorance, indifference, ne…

  • Government Finance on the Eve of the Civil War

    Open Access•Robert T Patterson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1952•Referências: 1

Financially, the Federal Government was more poorly prepared for war in the early months of 1861 than it had been since its establishment. The financial policies of the government in the period preceding the war weakened its credit; and this, along with the urgency of the conflict, was to make short-term borrowing and the printing of paper money attractive but costly wartime expedients. Although the failure to finance the war on a sound basis can…
