Mental Health Care Barriers for Women Involved in the Criminal Legal System With Substance Use Disorders
This study investigated barriers to accessing mental health care among criminal-legal involved women with opioid use disorder (OUD) by triangulating perspectives across affected women ( n = 20), criminal legal professionals ( n = 10), and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment professionals ( n = 12). Themes from qualitative interviews conducted in 2022 identified two primary types of barriers: physical access and stigma. Findings converged regar…
The Role of Child Maltreatment and Revictimization on Substance Use Trajectories Among Women Involved in the Criminal Justice System
We explored the mechanisms underlying the relationship between trauma in childhood and adulthood and substance use initiation and recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD). We triangulated the perspectives of 20 women with current/previous OUD and 22 criminal legal and drug treatment professionals. Themes centered around the long-term effects of unaddressed childhood trauma, family- and partner-based trauma across the life course, sexual trauma, an…
The Relationship Between Methadone and Buprenorphine Enrollment and Overdose Prevention and Treatment Behaviors Among a Community Sample of People Who Use Opioids in Baltimore, Maryland
Findings suggest the importance of promoting overdose prevention and care behaviors to people in drug treatment and training them to promote overdose prevention and care behaviors among their drug-using network members and other community members
The benefits and potential biases of lived experience in substance use treatment services
Research points to the value of shared lived experience in opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment, but most focuses solely on professionals in designated peer support (PS) roles. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 20 women with OUD and 6 treatment professionals in recovery working outside of designated PS roles, this manuscript examines the support and bias which providers with lived experience may convey to patients. Women with OUD emphasized the …
Naloxone administration and survival in overdoses involving opioids and stimulants
Physical Accessibility Barriers to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment
Introduction The opioid overdose crisis necessitates the development of effective treatment and harm reduction practices. Recent increases in opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose rates among women in tandem with lower medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment utilization rates make a case for investigating the barriers faced by women with OUD in accessing MOUD treatment. To inform future interventions, this study examines factors tha…
Understanding Regional Patterns of Overdose Deaths Related to Opioids and Psychostimulants
BACKGROUND: As overdose rates increase for multiple substances, policymakers need to identify geographic patterns of substance-specific deaths. In this study, we describe county-level opioid and psychostimulant overdose patterns and how they correlate with county-level social vulnerability measures. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study, we used nationwide 2016-2018 restricted access Centers for Disease Prevention and Control county-leve…

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Heroin, Methamphetamine, and Cocaine Use, Treatment, and Mortality Trends in 3 National Data Sources—United States, 2010-2019
BACKGROUND: As overdose deaths continue to rise, public health officials need comprehensive surveillance data to design effective prevention, harm reduction, and treatment strategies. Disparities across race and ethnicity groups, as well as trends in substance use, treatment, or overdose deaths, have been examined individually, but reports rarely compare findings across multiple substances or data sources. OBJECTIVE: To provide a broad assessment…
Age-specific disparities in fatal drug overdoses highest among older black adults and American Indian/Alaska native individuals of all ages in the United States, 2015-2020
Overdose fatalities unprecedently impact older Non-Hispanic Black adults and American Indian/Alaska Native populations of all ages, deviating from the pattern found for Non-Hispanic White individuals. Findings highlight the need for targeted naloxone and low-threshold buprenorphine programs to reduce racial disparities
The Impact of Racism, Class, and Criminal Justice on Women’s Distress and Health
Social Networks, Stigma, and Hepatitis C Care Among Women Who Inject Drugs
This study explores the role of perceived HCV stigma and social networks on HCV care among people who inject drugs (PWID) of both sexes, and solely among women who inject drugs (WWID). Data were from 269 HCV positive PWID, community-recruited through street-based outreach in Baltimore, MD. We defined HCV stigma based on participants' perceptions of treatment by others and their need to conceal their HCV status. Among WWID, HCV stigma was linked w…
Factors associated with current and severe pain among people living with HIV
The relationship between pain and mental health is complex. Thus, future research is needed to determine if pain treatments may reduce mental health symptoms or if treatments can be targeted to address both issues simultaneously
A Longitudinal Analysis of the Substance Abuse, Violence, and HIV/Aids (Sava) Syndemic among Women in the Criminal Justice System
Using data from a randomized controlled trial of 319 women mainly recruited from a Municipal Drug Court System in St. Louis, MO, this study evaluates substance use, victimization, and HIV/AIDS risk behaviors over time. The results indicated that, for all participants, the likelihood of victimization, using drugs, and meeting the criteria for HIV/AIDS risk decreased by 46% by the eight-month follow-up; however, results did not differ significantly…
