Fronto-striato network function is reduced in major depressive disorder
The reward system function is decreased in MDD patients, and this decrease may be more pronounced in younger patients, although further research is still needed
Real-world clinical determinants of alcohol dependence in outpatients with bipolar disorder
Background Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by mood swings between manic and depressed states that causes psychosocial problems. Cognitive function deteriorates with each recurrence, making it important to maintain remission through continued treatment. Bipolar disorder often co-occurs with alcohol dependence, which is known to lead to decreased treatment adherence and increased suicide risk. However, the real-world clinic…
Predictors of psychiatric hospitalization among outpatients with bipolar disorder in the real-world clinical setting
Our study revealed that 3.06% of outpatients with bipolar disorder were subjected to psychiatric hospitalization during a 1-year period that extended to September-October 2017. Our study suggested that bipolar I disorder, lower baseline GAF scores, unemployment, substance abuse and baseline mood state could be predictors of psychiatric hospitalization. These results may be useful for clinicians seeking to prevent psychiatric hospitalization for b…
Clinical characteristics and prescriptions associated with a 2-year course of rapid cycling and euthymia in bipolar disorder
RC and EUT generally exhibit conflicting characteristics, and the conflicting social backgrounds and factors contributing to their outcomes were distinctive. Understanding these clinical characteristics may be helpful in clinical practice for management of patients with BD
Volumetric assessment of individual thalamic nuclei in patients with drug-naïve, first-episode major depressive disorder
This is the first research study to investigate alterations of the various thalamic nuclei volumes in MDD patients compared with HCs. Moreover, we first analyzed the association between individual thalamic nuclei volumes and HAM-D subscale scores. Though our study may be restricted at certain levels, especially by the demographic difference between the two groups, they possibly contribute at a preliminary level to understanding the thalamic struc…
Gyrification patterns in first-episode, drug-naïve major depression
These results suggest that abnormal early cortical neurodevelopment may mediate vulnerability to MDD, independent of plasma BDNF levels and depressive symptoms
Risk Factors in Japanese Drug Overdose Patients
Several suicide attempts presented at the emergency department are due to drug overdose associated with psychiatric disorders. We examined and identified the major risk factors among Japanese drug overdose patients and several close associations of suicide risk. We enrolled 101 patients who attempted suicide by drug overdose between January 2015 and April 2018, assessed their background using the SAD PERSONS scale, and performed association rule …
Association Between Loneliness and Sleep-Related Problems Among Japanese Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been linked to a rise in loneliness. Loneliness is associated with sleep-related problems, which in turn can be a risk factor for various psychiatric disorders. However, it is unclear whether loneliness is linked to sleep-related problems during the pandemic. Here, we studied the association between loneliness and sleep-related problems during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Methods…
Association Between Time Spent With Family and Loneliness Among Japanese Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Background: The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had large impacts on society, including people practicing social distancing. This behavioral response has increased loneliness. Loneliness not only increases the risk of psychiatric disorders, but also affects occupational mental health. To avoid the negative effects of isolation, it is important to have social contact with other people, especially family members. Employment and economic…
Associations Between the Kynurenine Pathway, Proinflammatory Cytokines, and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Hospitalized Patients With Chronic Schizophrenia
Purpose: The kynurenine (Kyn) pathway may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. This pathway shows crosstalk with proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and/or brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Moreover, Kyn metabolites affect neurotransmission and cause neurotoxicity. To date, the influence of the Kyn pathway on proinflammatory cytokines and BDNF remains to b…
Association Between Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Levels and the Clinical Symptoms of Chronic Schizophrenia
Purpose: Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a trophic mediator that is regulated by growth hormone and associated with the proliferation, development, and growth of neural cells. IGF-1 may be associated with the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, but this association remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum IGF-1 levels and psychiatric symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Patients and M…
A Metabolomics Study of Serum in Hospitalized Patients With Chronic Schizophrenia
Purpose: Metabolomics has attracted attention as a new method for understanding the molecular mechanisms of psychiatric disorders. Current metabolomics technology allows us to measure over hundreds of metabolites at a time and is a useful indicator of the consequences of complex and continuous changes in metabolic profiles due to the execution of genomic information and external factors of biological activity. Therefore, metabolomics is imperativ…
Effects of Continuing Oral Risperidone vs. Switching from Risperidone to Risperidone Long-Acting Injection on Cognitive Function in Stable Schizophrenia Patients
The results of this preliminary study suggest that switching from oral risperidone to RLAI may improve verbal capability more than continuing with oral risperidone. However, these findings must be replicated in a larger, double-blind study
Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, and Plasma Catecholamine Metabolites in People with Major Depression
The results suggest that there are no significant correlations between catecholamine metabolites and BDNF in the blood for MDD patients
The Impact of Aging, Psychotic Symptoms, Medication, and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor on Cognitive Impairment in Japanese Chronic Schizophrenia Patients
Background: Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia can result in considerable difficulty in performing functions of daily life or social rehabilitation. Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is related to various factors, such as the psychotic severity, aging, medication, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). To date, however, no studies investigating the impact of these factors on cognitive functioning in chronic schizophrenia patients ha…
