Racial differences in the elderly's use of medical procedures and diagnostic tests
OBJECTIVES. This study sought to examine racial differences in the use of medical procedures and diagnostic tests by elderly Americans. METHODS. We used 1986 physician claims data for a 5% national sample of Medicare enrollees aged 65 years and older to study 32 procedures and tests. For each service, we calculated the age- and sex-adjusted rate of use by race and the corresponding White-Black relative risk. RESULTS. Whites were more likely than …

By the end of 1987, the Centers for Disease Control reported about 50,000 cumulative cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) since 1981. Black Power, White Resistance, and Public Policy
Scholars have demonstrated that three types of black power tactics--electoral, protest, and violent--influence public policy. However, they have ignored both the relative efficacy of various black power tactics and the influence of the countermovement. This study examines the distribution of poverty program grants to Mississippi counties in 1968 and 1972 in order to shed light on three alternative explanations: (1) various black power tactics inf…

The choice of tactics utilized by groups to achieve social change is a hotly debated but little researched topic. Examining the relative effects of black electoral power, black protest politics, and riots, controlling for need, indicates that the level of black electoral power and nonviolent protest significantly influenced changes in the number of Mississippi welfare recipients 1960-1970.
