Purpose: The PRAYAS Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis (IPD-MA) database aims to estimate the prevalence of anemia among children under 18 years, non-pregnant and non-lactating (NPNL) women, and pregnant women (by trimester), with further stratification by age group, year, and region of India. Beyond prevalence, it seeks to address the etiological contribution of iron and other erythropoietic micronutrient deficiencies and to evaluate the effe…
Development and validation of a novel clinical risk score to predict hypoxaemia in children with pneumonia using the WHO PREPARE dataset
BACKGROUND: Hypoxaemia predicts mortality at all levels of care, and appropriate management can reduce preventable deaths. However, pulse oximetry and oxygen therapy remain inaccessible in many primary care health facilities. We aimed to develop and validate a simple risk score comprising commonly evaluated clinical features to predict hypoxaemia in 2-59-month-old children with pneumonia. METHODS: Data from seven studies conducted in five countri…
Diagnostic performance of red cell indices in detecting iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia among rural adolescent girls aged 14–19 years in Nagpur District
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) remains a major public health concern among adolescent girls in rural areas. This study assessed the diagnostic performance of red cell distribution width (RDW) and hemoglobin (Hb) in detecting IDA. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 221 healthy rural adolescent girls (14–19 years) randomly selected from 24 government schools across 18 villages under four primary health centers in Nagpur district, Maharashtra…

Providing optimal care in the neonatal care units in India
Nearly one quarter (600,000) of all neonatal deaths worldwide per year occur in India. To reduce neonatal mortality, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare established neonatal care units, including neonatal intensive care units and specialized neonatal care units to provide immediate care at birth, resuscitation for asphyxiation, postnatal care, follow up for high-risk newborns, immunization, and referral for additional or complex heal…
The prevalence of anemia during pregnancy and its correlates vary by trimester and hemoglobin assessment method in Eastern Maharashtra, India
Approximately half of pregnant women in India are anemic, representing over 7.5 million women. Few studies have assessed the relationship between multiple micronutrient deficiencies and anemia during pregnancy or the trajectory of hemoglobin (Hb) during pregnancy in low-resource settings. We enrolled 200 pregnant women from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Maharashtra, Indi…
M-Sakhi – Mobile health solutions to help community providers promote maternal and infant nutrition and health
Objective: Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) intervention programmes often lack documentation of successful processes. This manuscript aims to describe the development of Program Impact Pathway (PIP) using Theory of Change (ToC) approach for a mHealth BCC intervention titled ‘Mobile Solutions Aiding Knowledge for Health Improvement (M-SAKHI)’ aimed at reducing stunting in infants at 18 months of age. Design: The PIP was developed using ToC to …
Anaemia prevalence, its determinants and profile of micronutrient status among rural school adolescent girls aged 14–19 years
Objective: The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of anaemia among 14–19 years school going girls, risk factors for it and profile of micronutrient status among rural girls from western state of India. Design: Using a cross-sectional design, we obtained information on socio-demography, menstruation, dietary habits, knowledge and daily consumption of the government recommended iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets, and anthropometr…
Comparing the efficacy of electronic cognitive behavioral therapy to medication and combination therapy for generalized anxiety disorder
Incorporating e-CBT on its own or in combination with pharmaceutical interventions is a viable option for treating GAD. Treating GAD with e-CBT or medication appears to offer significant improvements in symptoms, with no meaningful difference between the two. Combining the treatments also offer significant improvements, while not necessarily superior to either independently. The findings suggest that all options are viable. Taking the patient's p…

Derivation and validation of a novel risk assessment tool to identify children aged 2–59 months at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality in 20 countries
INTRODUCTION: Existing risk assessment tools to identify children at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality have shown suboptimal discriminatory value during external validation. Our objective was to derive and validate a novel risk assessment tool to identify children aged 2-59 months at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality across various settings. METHODS: We used primary, baseline, patient-level data from 11 studies, incl…
Assembling a global database of child pneumonia studies to inform WHO pneumonia management algorithm
Background: The existing World Health Organization (WHO) pneumonia case management guidelines rely on clinical symptoms and signs for identifying, classifying, and treating pneumonia in children up to 5 years old. We aimed to collate an individual patient-level data set from large, high-quality pre-existing studies on pneumonia in children to identify a set of signs and symptoms with greater validity in the diagnosis, prognosis, and possible trea…
Seasonal trends and maternal characteristics as predictors of maternal undernutrition and low birthweight in Eastern Maharashtra, India
Few studies have assessed whether women and infants in rural and peri-urban communities in South Asia experience seasonal fluctuations in nutritional status; however, a handful of studies have documented seasonal variability in risk factors for undernutrition including food availability, physical activity and infections. We used data from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Ma…
Assessing the Respiratory Effects of Air Pollution from Biomass Cookstoves on Pregnant Women in Rural India
Increased FeNO levels and higher dyspnea scores in biomass-fuel-exposed subjects confirm the adverse respiratory effects of this exposure during pregnancy. More so, FeNO may be a useful, noninvasive biomarker of inflammation that can help better understand the physiologic effects of biomass smoke on pregnant women. In the future, larger studies are needed to characterize the utility of FeNO in a population exposed to HAP
Use of Mobile Health in Infant and Young Child Nutrition
Undernutrition is a major public health problem for under 5 years of age children in India. Approximately 41% and 21% of under 5 years of age children are stunted and wasted respectively. Despite the known importance of age appropriate infant and young child feeding practices for child nutrition, the rates of these practices remain poor in India. The major determinants for inappropriate IYCF practices are beliefs and knowledge of parents and care…
M‐Sakhi—Mobile health solutions to help community providers promote maternal and infant nutrition and health using a community‐based cluster randomized controlled trial in rural India
Reduction of childhood stunting is difficult to achieve by interventions that focus only on improving nutrition during infancy. Comprehensive interventions that extend through the continuum of care from pregnancy to infancy are needed. Mobile phones are now successfully being used for behaviour change communication to improve health. We present the methodology of an mHealth intervention "Mobile Solutions Aiding Knowledge for Health Improvement" (…
Opportunities for strengthening infant and young child feeding policies in South Asia
The key opportunities for strengthening IYCF policy support were in relation to translating strategic directives into implementation level documents; improving multi-sectoral support and coordination; and increased clarity regarding roles and responsibilities of frontline workers interacting with mothers. These findings can support efforts to strengthen IYCF policy at the national and regional level
Policy content and stakeholder network analysis for infant and young child feeding in India
We identified a wide range of strengths in the IYCF policy environment in India and also opportunities for improvement. One key strength is the integration of IYCF policies into a range of agendas and guidelines related to health and child development service delivery at the national and state level. However, the lack of a specific national policy on IYCF means that there is no formal mechanism for review and monitoring implementation across sect…
Household Air Pollution Intervention Implications
Exposure to household air pollution is estimated to be the 3rd largest contributor to the global burden of disease and the largest contributor in South Asia. Unacceptability of improved cook stoves by the intended user has been identified as a crucial factor hindering uptake and sustained use. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the socio-cultural factors that influence acceptance of improved cookstoves and conducted a systematic field…

Skewed Sex Ratios in India
Sex selection, a gender discrimination of the worst kind, is highly prevalent across all strata of Indian society. Physicians have a crucial role in this practice and implementation of the Indian Government’s Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act in 1996 to prevent the misuse of ultrasound techniques for the purpose of prenatal sex determination. Little is known about family preferences, let alone preferences among families of physicians. We invest…
Comparisons of complementary feeding indicators and associated factors in children aged 6–23 months across five South Asian countries
Improving infant and young child feeding practices will help South Asian countries achieve the Millennium Development Goal of reducing child mortality. This paper aims to compare key indicators of complementary feeding and their determinants in children aged 6-23 months across five South Asian countries - Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The latest Demographic and Health Survey and National Family Health Survey India data were us…
Determinants of inappropriate complementary feeding practices in young children in India
In India, poor feeding practices in early childhood contribute to the burden of malnutrition as well as infant and child mortality. This paper aims to use the newly developed World Health Organization (WHO) infant feeding indicators to determine the prevalence of complementary feeding indicators among children of 6-23 months of age and to identify the determinants of inappropriate complementary feeding practices in India. The study data on 15,028…
