Negative ozone anomalies at a high mountain site in northern Italy during 2020
Several studies investigated the possible impacts of the restriction measures related to the containment of the spread of the COrona VIrus Disease (COVID-19) to atmospheric ozone (O 3 ) at global, regional, and local scales during 2020. O 3 is a secondary pollutant with adverse effects on population health and ecosystems and with negative impacts on climate, acting as greenhouse gas. Most of these studies focused on spring 2020 (i.e. March–May) a…
Decadal O3 variability at the Mt. Cimone WMO/GAW global station (2,165 m a.s.l., Italy) and comparison with two high-mountain “reference” sites in Europe
Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a greenhouse gas as well as a harmful air pollutant with adverse effects on human health and vegetation: The observation and attribution of its long-term variability are key activities to monitor the effectiveness of pollution reduction protocols. In this work, we present the analysis of multi-annual near-surface O3 (1996–2016) at the Mt. Cimone (CMN, Italian northern Apennines) WMO/GAW global station and the comparison…
Investigation of reactive gases and methane variability in the coastal boundary layer of the central Mediterranean basin
We present a characterization of reactive gases (RG: O3, NO, NO2,SO2, CO) and methane (CH4) variability in the central Mediterranean basin, analyzing in situ measurements at three new permanent WMO/GAW Observatories in Southern Italy: Capo Granitola – CGR (Sicily), Lamezia Terme – LMT (Calabria) and Lecce – ECO (Apulia). At all the measurement sites, a combination of the breeze wind system (especially at CGR and LMT),PBL dynamics, anthropogenic/na…
Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report
In support of the first Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report (TOAR) a relational database of global surface ozone observations has been developed and populated with hourly measurement data and enhanced metadata. A comprehensive suite of ozone data products including standard statistics, health and vegetation impact metrics, and trend information, are made available through a common data portal and a web interface. These data form the basis of the…
Long-term (2002–2012) investigation of Saharan dust transport events at Mt. Cimone GAW global station, Italy (2165 m a.s.l.)
Mineral dust transport from North Africa towards the Mediterranean basin and Europe was monitored over an 11-y period (2002–2012) using the continuous observations made at Mt. Cimone WMO/GAW global station (CMN). CMN is in a strategic position for investigating the impact of mineral dust transported from northern Africa on the atmospheric composition of the Mediterranean basin and southern Europe. The identification of “dusty days” is based on co…
Transport of short-lived climate forcers/pollutants (SLCF/P) to the Himalayas during the South Asian summer monsoon onset
Over the course of six years (2006-2011), equivalent black carbon (eqBC), coarse aerosol mass (PM1-10), and surface ozone (O3), observed during the monsoon onset period at the Nepal Climate Observatory-Pyramid WMO/GAW Global Station (NCO-P, 5079 m a.s.l.), were analyzed to investigate events characterized by a significant increase in these short-lived climate forcers/pollutants (SLCF/P). These events occurred during periods characterized by low (…
Atmospheric Pollution in the Hindu Kush–Himalaya Region
This paper presents a detailed review of atmospheric pollution observed in the Hindu Kush–Himalaya (HKH) region and its implications for regional climate. Data from in situ measurements made at high-altitude stations in the HKH region, observations from satellite-based instruments, and global climate modeling study results are discussed. Experimental observations discussed include both atmospheric measurements and data from snow and ice core samp…
