Structural Analysis of Xenophobia
We develop and estimate a general equilibrium signaling game model of xenophobia, in which the reputational consequences of committing xenophobic acts are determined endogenously. Using our unique survey data, which enables the identification of the model, we find that reputational incentives are a key driver of xenophobic behavior, suggesting that policies targeting these motivations could be effective. Drawing upon the theories of conceptual metaphors and embodiment, in the present study we systematically examined the metaphorical link between spicy tastes and anger. In terms of personality, the results showed that participants presumed strangers who liked spicy foods (e.g., chili peppers) were more easily angered (Experiment 1).
