Limits of an episteme
This paper develops the concept of epistemic voids to theorize how structural absences within knowledge systems shape agricultural transformation and future-making in marginalized rural regions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with smallholder horticultural farmers in Namibia’s Zambezi Region, it examines how these voids emerge through material constraints, fragmented institutions, and uneven access to knowledge. Epistemic voids become visible …
Principles for ethical boundary spanning between science, policy and practice
Knowledge brokers have emerged as a key mechanism for facilitating knowledge exchange across institutional and epistemic divides to enable more inclusive, informed, and context-sensitive decision-making. However, despite growing recognition about their value and importance, critical gaps remain related to how knowledge brokers operate that hinders their effectiveness and efficiency in practice. One such gap relates to the ethical dimensions of th…
Open science for the ocean. Recommendations from the perspective of marine carbon observations in Germany, Brazil, and beyond
The ocean plays an essential role in regulating the global climate, absorbing around 25 % of global CO 2 emissions. Scientific knowledge of the ocean’s capacity as a carbon sink is therefore essential for policy-making at the national and international level. However, the capacity of the existing marine science system to deliver this information at sufficiently high quality, without geographical and temporal gaps, and with equitable contributions…

Advancing Sustainable Development
Against the backdrop of populist attacks on science and sustainable development, the Sustainability Science Summit 2025 focused on advancing sustainability transformations. With over 30 sessions structured around three high-level panel discussions, it addressed global challenges in sustainability science, the transformation of research practices, and the science-policy interface
Stories of Disaster as Sites of Mitigation
This article explores how nuclear disaster narratives have both been informed by and articulated collective images of risk and uncertainty since the 1980s. Drawing on ideas from classical and affective narratology that are framed by a perspective informed by the sociology of knowledge, we examine three variations of narrating nuclear disasters in different media: (1) sociologist Charles Perrow’s detailed analysis of the Three Mile Island accident…

Planetary health literacy
Education for planetary health could be one of the key levers of the much-needed civilizational turn toward a sustainable and healthy future. Education goes beyond information provision and passing on of knowledge and includes competencies to transfer knowledge from one decision situation to another. There are a range of different literacy concepts from various research perspectives that aim to improve such competencies. While many contain aspect…
Making the UN Ocean Decade work? The potential for, and challenges of, transdisciplinary research and real‐world laboratories for building towards ocean solutions
Due to the strong interconnectedness between the ocean and our societies worldwide, improved ocean governance is essential for sustainable development in the context of the UN Ocean Decade. However, a multitude of different perspectives—ecological, societal, political, economic—and relations between these have to be understood and taken into consideration to foster transformative pathways towards marine sustainability. A core challenge that we ar…

Uzbekistan – A Region of World Society? Variants of Differentiation in Agricultural Resources Governance
This article studies the layered coexistence and mutual shaping of three forms of differentiation (functional, segmentary, hierarchical) in rural Uzbekistan, a region of world society that, since 1991, is undergoing tremendous processes of socio-economic transformation and change. More precisely, we analyse the evolving governance of land, water and agricultural support services (knowledge & advice) in the Uzbek province of Khorezm, where current…
Governance and the coastal condition
The conceptual framework of evolutionary governance theory (EGT) is deployed and extended to rethink the idea of coastal governance and the possibilities of a coastal governance better adapted to challenges of climate change and intensified use of both land and sea. ‘The coastal condition’ is analysed as a situation where particular modes of observation and coordination were possible and necessary, and those observations (and derived calculations…
Land-sea interactions and coastal development
Coasts are changing at an impressive speed. Therewith come changes in and challenges to governance that require an empirically-based understanding in order to foster sustainability transitions. New challenges are often not adequately met, so a host of problems arise. The papers in this special issue speak to these problems and consider which governance approaches might be worth exploring. The authors look at a diverse set of governance practices …
The social shaping of media technologies’ multiple uses
How can we explain the multiple uses that media organizations make of media technologies across the world? This paper proposes a hybrid conceptual framework that synthesizes ideas from the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse with science & technology studies concepts (i.e., script and technological frame) in order to emphasize the importance of policy and organizational discourses in shaping multiple uses of media technologies by media o…
Epistemic Mobilities
A rich corpus of literature exists on traveling knowledges, their carriers, and connectivities. Yet there is less emphasis on how trajectories of mobility themselves, and the knowledges that circulate coevolve in the process of travel. In this article, we propose "epistemic mobilities" as a conceptual lens with which to empirically trace the transfer and translation of knowledges and practices as they come to be embedded in existing and new socia…
Rhetorics and realities of participation
We present a context-sensitive perspective on participation in rural development, revolving around the reconstruction of unique sets of differences between rhetorics and realities. Using a theoretical frame inspired by the Evolutionary Governance Theory, we identify mechanisms of reinterpretation and delimitation of participation in the context of evolving rural governance. Through a detailed case study of the Ethiopian agricultural extension sys…
Area Studies at the Crossroads
Neoliberal globalization is reinforcing geographically based forms of domination that emerged in the era of imperialism, reinforcing divides between metropolitan centres of power and marginalized groups and societies on the global periphery. This is also true of academic analysis and theory production. The transnational neoliberal regime of so-called academic quality assessment is entrenching Euro-American intellectual dominance and Euro-Amerocen…

Higher education cooperation in Asean
The triad of cooperation, international exchange, and integration among institutions of higher education has become the new norm in the global experience of learning and academic training. The goal of improving and standardising the academic experience across countries is now typically also associated with fostering cultural and political ties and complementing processes of cultural integration and economic growth. Behind the rhetoric of many new…

On 31 December 1985, Singapore left the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), turning against the ‘New International Information Order’ demanded by UNESCO at that time. In October 2007, after 22 years of absence, Singapore rejoined UNESCO, looking for an intensification of cultural and scientific exchange. Taking this example of reviving co-operation between Singapore and UNESCO, this paper assesses the concep…
Transdisciplinary innovation research in Uzbekistan - one year of 'Follow-the-Innovation
In 2008, a German-funded interdisciplinary research project in Khorezm province, Uzbekistan, initiated a participatory approach to innovation development and diffusion with local stakeholders. Selected agricultural innovations, developed by the project and identified as ‘plausible promises’, have since then been tested and modified accordingly by teams of researchers, local farmers and water users. This paper discusses the challenges faced in thi…

Water Is Life'-Farmer Rationales and Water Saving in Khorezm, Uzbekistan
Khorezm Province is located in the Amu Darya lowlands of Uzbekistan, where unsustainable use of irrigation water has led to the Aral Sea crisis. This study deals with the question of how farmers in Khorezm perceive water and its management and how this facilitates or prevents water conservation, or 'water saving,' in irrigated agriculture. To answer this from the perspective of the water users, we apply Schütz's lifeworld concept to the study of …

Re-inventing Society
Different concepts of knowledge and the ways they are valued have influence on the politics of research and development, information, arts, and culture in various countries. In a time when knowledge increasingly gains importance for economic and social development, these concepts of knowledge, as they are defined within society, are receiving greater attention. State governments worldwide aim for the creation of 'knowledge societies'. At the core…
