Early Pleistocene faunal assemblages and human records in southern Europe
Introduction to special issue
Mammal Paleoecology from the Late Early Pleistocene Sites of the Dandiero Basin (Eritrea), With Emphasis on the Suid Record
In the East African Rift System, Plio-Pleistocene environmental instability triggered major environmental changes, which in turn influenced patterns of mammal diversification, dispersal, and turnover (Bobe and Eck, 2001; O’Regan et al., 2005, 2011b; Hernández-Fernández and Vrba, 2006; Martínez-Navarro, 2010; Patterson et al., 2014), including hominin evolution (Behrensmeyer, 2006; Bailey and King, 2011; Potts, 2013; Antón et al., 2014).

The endocast of the one‐million‐year‐old human cranium from Buia (UA 31), Danakil Eritrea
The endocast of UA 31 shows a general plesiomorphic phenotype, with some individual features (e.g., dolichocephaly and rounded lower parietal areas) which confirm a remarkable degree of morphological variability within the H. erectus/ergaster hypodigm. Isotopic reconstructions of habitat change surrounding the extinction of Oreopithecus , the last European ape
OBJECTIVE: Oreopithecus bambolii was the last hominoid to survive in Europe. The purpose of this investigation was to reconstruct, through stable isotope analyses, Oreopithecus' habitat, subsistence behavior, and changes in habitat that may have led to its extinction. METHODS: Carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from inorganic carbonate in tooth enamel from Oreopithecus and its contemporaneous faunas from localities in Tuscany and Sardinia were sam…

Size matters
Domestic pigs were a key component of the Neolithic Revolution because of their great relevance to farming. Zoo-archaeological evidences suggest that Sus scrofa was domesticated in the Fertile Crescent about 10,500 years BP. From that moment, early Neolithic farmers spread domestic pigs westward into Europe. Yet, once domesticated, European pigs rapidly replaced pigs of Near Eastern origin throughout Europe. A temporal distribution change between…
Late Villafranchian Ursus etruscus and other large carnivorans from the Orce sites (Guadix-Baza basin, Andalusia, southern Spain)
First record of Mesopithecus (Cercopithecidae, Colobinae) from the Miocene of the Iberian Peninsula
Facies associations of the northern Dandiero Basin (Danakil depression, Eritrea, including the Pleistocene Buya homo site)
The Dandiero Basin is located on the northern part of the 300 km-long Danakil depression. The geologic succession filling the Dandiero Basin is up to 1000 m thick and consists of three synthems, inascending order: the Early-to-Middle Pleistocene Maebele Synthem of fluvio-lacustrine origin; the Late Pleistocene Curbelu Synthem of alluvial deposits and the Late Pleistocene to Holocene Samoti Synthem alluvio-eolian sand. This study and map (1:5000 s…
Large mammal biochronology framework in Europe at Jaramillo
The morphology of Oreopithecus bambolii pollical distal phalanx
Oreopithecus bambolii is a Late Miocene ape from Italy, first described in the late 19th century. Its interpretation is still highly controversial, especially in reference to its hand proportions and thumb morphology. In this study, the authors provide detailed descriptions of the available Oreopithecus pollical distal phalanx (PDP) specimens, as well as bivariate and multivariate morphometric analyses in comparison with humans, extant apes, sele…

The taxonomic status and biochronological implications of new finds ofOreopithecus from Baccinello (Tuscany, Italy)
Several species of mammals endemic to the late Miocene faunas of the Maremma region of Tuscany in Italy are known to have undergone a significant degree of morphological change during the time interval between the deposition of V-1 and V-2 horizons at Baccinello. This raises the interesting question of whether or notOreopithecus, which occurs in association with both V-1 and V-2 faunas, exhibits corresponding morphological change or taxonomic dif…

The Olduvai buffalo Pelorovis and the origin of Bos
The origin of the genus Bos is a debated issue. From ∼ 0.5 Ma until historic times, the genus is well known in the Eurasian large mammal assemblages, where it is represented by Bos primigenius . This species has a highly derived cranial anatomy that shows important morphological differences from other Plio-Pleistocene Eurasian genera of the tribe Bovini such as Leptobos , Bison , Proamphibos-Hemibos , and Bubalus . The oldest clear evidence of Bo…
