We Are Still Here
As Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) scholars, we formed meaningful connections as academics, students, and friends. Throughout this reflective article, we explore the profound impact of our intersectional and critical race-informed scholarship on our professional practice and pedagogy while highlighting the ways that collaborating on this work enriched our journeys as scholars of color. These collaboration…
Risk factors of paternal postpartum depression among Latino fathers
Several studies of paternal postpartum depression (PPD) typically use homogenous samples. As a growing population and susceptibility to experiencing postpartum depression, little is known about the risk factors associated with paternal postpartum depression among Latino fathers. The nonrandomized convenience sampling strategy yielded a heterogeneous sample of 101 Latino fathers. Predictors of paternal PPD were coping skills, age, having a partner…
Residential Black fathers’ engagement as a protective factor for sexual outcomes among Black adolescent and young adult females
Recent fatherhood scholarship highlights the value of Black fathers in the lives of their sons. However, few scholars point to what Black fathers provide to the lives of their Black daughters as it relates to sexual outcomes. The current study uses logistic regression analysis to examine responses (n = 846) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), 1994–2008 (ICPSR 21,600), using Waves II, III, and IV, (ages…
Family interventions to improve mental, emotional, and behavioral health outcomes among Latinx youth
A Mixed-Methods Study of the Experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color MSW Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Few studies have explored the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) MSW students during the pandemic. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the experiences of BIPOC MSW students in a predominantly white institution in the Northeast during the pandemic and how it affected their mental health. Findings presented were drawn from 29 students who participated in online surveys and focus groups. About 69% of our…
The need for culturally congruent supervision for Black and Latinx social workers
Supervision is a dynamic interaction between the supervisor and supervisee that influences professional and clinical behavior. Studies have found that ethnoracial concordance between provider and client is more beneficial to the health decisions and outcomes of the clients. Ethnic, cultural, and racial matching between social worker and client can improve retention, treatment outcomes, and completion. Thus, social workers must consider increasing…
The association between self-Esteem, stigma, and mental health among South African youth living with HIV
Treatment among pYLHIV focuses on their physical health. However, they also experience depression and anxiety, compounded by developmental challenges and the stress of managing a chronic illness. However, limited services are available to help pYLHIV manage the emotional stressors of living with a stigmatized condition. Data are from 37 caregiver-child dyads in the VUKA EKHAYA study, in Durban, South Africa. Outcomes were self-esteem and stigma. …
South African child report of caregiver attunement as a mechanism to decrease engagement in risky sexual situations and depression
Research regarding South African caregivers' protective parenting behaviors that can improve youth well-being in early adolescence is limited. Therefore, this study explored the affective and protective aspects of adult caregiving that influence mental health and possible engagement in sexual situations among Black South African early adolescents. Structural Equation Modeling was employed using baseline data from 577 youth to examine caregiver co…

South African adult caregivers as “protective shields”
Low-income youths in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, face elevated risks to their well-being from exposure to neighborhood conditions correlated with engaging in risky behaviors. These risks can be mitigated through adult caregivers who serve as protective shields, buffering adverse conditions. However, this protective role is dependent on the caregivers' mental health and well-being. This secondary analysis uses baseline data from 475 child-caregiv…
Social support and school outcomes of adolescents orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/Aids living in South Western Uganda
The goal of this study is to examine the role of social support from multiple sources, including the extended family, caregivers, classmates, peers and teachers, in improving the school outcomes (grades and attendance) of children orphaned by AIDS in Uganda. Data for this study comes from a 4-year randomized control trial, called Suubi-Maka (Hope for families), conducted in the Southwestern part of Uganda from 2008 to 2012. Using multivariate reg…
Provider Attitudes, Organizational Readiness for Change, and Uptake of Research Supported Treatment
The organizational context is an important factor that relates to attitudes toward and use of RST in practice. Future research is needed to continue examining factors of RST uptake and sustainability
