  • Digital natives

    Open Access•Vanda Pribacic, Tatjana Škarić-Jurić et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Today's adolescents are immersed in a digital environment, with social networks central to their lives for entertainment, communication and getting information. Being online enables adolescents to share their daily experiences, opinions, emotions, attitudes and express their identity. Still, the displacement hypothesis suggests that time spent on media reduces the time available for other, offline activities (e.g., physical activity),…

    Open Access•Daria Ložnjak Dizdar, Daria Ložnjak-Dizdar et al.•ARTICLE•Starinar•2025•Referências: 7

Batina is a multi-layered site situated on a prominent position above the Danube on Bansko Brdo in Baranja. This site holds particular significance for understanding the broader picture of settlement in the Middle Danube region during the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age, from the 11th to the 7th century BC. Numerous chance finds described in the literature are housed in nine different museums across Europe. Recent excavati…

  • Traces of Disease in Cremated Children’s Bones

Open Access•Petra Rajić Šikanjić, Daria Ložnjak Dizdar et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2024

Diseases are a constant of the human experience and have been affecting past populations of all periods, including those that practised cremation as a dominant burial rite. This paper focuses specifically on children’s health status in the Late Bronze and Iron Age (circa 1500–600 BC) inferred from the osteological analysis of cremated human remains. We have analysed skeletal material from four Croatian (Poljana Križevačka, Slatina, Batina and Sot…

  • Two Graves from Batina

    Open Access•Daria Ložnjak Dizdar, Carola Metzner‐nebelsick et al.•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2023

The majority of the Early Iron Age cremation graves of women near the Middle Danube in northeast Croatia and northwest Serbia, in the cemeteries of Batina, Dalj, Vukovar, Sotin and Doroslovo, contained an urn, a set of ceramic vessels, and sometimes costume accessories and additional jewellery items, such as hair bands, pendants, or fibulae. The present paper uses interdisciplinary analysis and interpretation to examine the chronology of graves 1…

  • Death, Funerals and Mourning on the Croatian Islands During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Ana Perinić Lewis, Petra Rajić Šikanjić et al.•ARTICLE•Collegium Antropologicum•2022

On islands and in island communities, especially smaller and more isolated ones, epidemics were often of greater intensity and left more significant consequences than on the mainland. The unique characteristics of an island (size, remoteness, isolation, small population size, and several manageable access points) affect the transmission of mainland epidemics and their frequency. The current global COVID-19 pandemic is an opportunity to investigat…

  • The potential of forgotten and hidden Zagreb historical cemeteries in the design of ‘dark’ tourist experiences

Ingeborg Matečić, Petra Rajić Šikanjić et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Heritage Tourism•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

On the territory of modern Zagreb, Croatia, several locations of historical cemeteries exist without visible markers of remains on the surface. Although forgotten and hidden, they are undetectably integrated into city’s everyday life. This paper aims to identify specific requirements and challenges in the design of ‘dark’ tourist experiences using the setting of such hidden Zagreb historical cemeteries. The main instrument used to shape a tourist…

    Open Access•Rocio Vidal-Ronchas, Petra Rajić Šikanjić et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2019•Citada por: 14•Referências: 37

Diet often plays a vital role in defining social divisions within and between social groups and thus can be used to understand the social paradigms of archeological cultures. During the Early Avar period (568-630 A.D.), burial evidence indicates that there were strong demarcations of social stratification and divisions between sexes and age groups; however, the symbols of intra-population heterogeneity become increasingly rare during the Late Ava…

Petra Rajić Šikanjić, Zrinka Premužić et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2017

Congenital anomalies develop during intrauterine development. They can occur in soft tissues as well as skeletal elements and vary from minor to life threatening. In this paper we present a case of an individual from the Neolithic site of Vinka, Croatia. This adult male exhibited multiple congenital anomalies on cranial and postcranial skeleton. These include several rib anomalies on the right side: hyperplasia of the third rib, bifid fourth rib …

The Avar period cemetery of Nuštar, situated in continental Croatia, is dated to the 8th and the beginning of the 9th century. Rescue archaeological excavation yielded 196 burials. During analysis of human skeletal remains, an individual with a large cranial lesion caused by trepanation was found. Trepanation is a surgical procedure performed on the skull in order to remove a fragment of the bone using a sharp instrument or drill. It has been pra…

Dento-alveolar pathologies: caries, ante mortem tooth loss, abscesses, calculus, alveolar resorption and tooth wear were analysed in two composite skeletal series from Croatia's eastern Adriatic coast (Dalmatia). The first consists of 103 skeletons from seven Late Antique (3rd-6th century AD) sites, the second of 151 skeletons from three Early Medieval (7th-11th centuries AD) sites. As recent bioarhaeological studies (Šlaus,2008) showed a signifi…

    Open Access•Petra Rajić Šikanjić, Dejana Vlak•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

Analysis of skeletons from Uzdolje-Grablje cemetery near Knin, Croatia, reveals three cases of an elongated styloid process. Elongation is a condition of unknown aetiology characterised by a styloid process that exceeds 30 mm. Although the prevalence of this condition has been reported in modern populations, we document for the first time elongated styloid processes in human skeletal material from an archaeological population. • A case of short‐root anomaly in a female from medieval Istria

Open Access•Petra Rajić Šikanjić, Meštrović et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006

Dental examination of a young female skeleton from medieval Istria revealed very short‐roots of both maxillary central incisors. This developmental pathological condition is known in the literature as short‐root anomaly, occurring mostly in maxillary incisors. In affected teeth, the crown:root ratio is 1:1.6. Although the prevalence of this condition has been reported in modern populations, this appears to be the first documented case of the anom…
