  • Late Neandertal occupations in a Galician mountain valley during MIS 3

    Open Access•Xosé-Pedro Rodríguez-Álvarez, A De Lombera-Hermida et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026

In this paper we analyze the last Neanderthal occupations in Cova Eirós (level 3, 41.7-39 ka cal. BP). This site is located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, at a prominent and strategic place in the small valley of Cancelo (Tricastela, Lugo, Spain), just at the intersection of the Cantabrian and western Atlantic basins. The occupations of level 3 of Cova Eirós show the survival of small, isolated Mousterian communities in mountainous and ma…

  • Expanding the Faunal Interpretation of the Cova Eirós (NW Iberia) Middle Paleolithic–Early Upper Paleolithic Record With ZooMS

    Open Access•Hugo Bal-García, Samantha Brown et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

The Cova Eirós archaeopaleontological site preserves the most comprehensive archaeostratigraphic sequence in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, with an exceptionally rich record spanning from the Mousterian to the Upper Paleolithic. The extensive fragmentation of the faunal record and the rich taxonomic diversity at this site have limited the identifiability of the remains and led to an overrepresentation of the main taxa ( Ursus spelaeus and Ce…

  • Paleoecological context of Homo aff. erectus (ATE7-1) at Sima del Elefante (late Early Pleistocene, Atapuerca, Spain) inferred from the herpetofaunal assemblage

Open Access•Christian Sánchez-Bandera, Ana Fagoaga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025

The Sima del Elefante cave is one of the archaeopaleontological sites located in the karstic complex of Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain), which is a remarkable locality for documenting an extensive sequence of human evidence. Within the stratigraphic sequence of the Sima del Elefante site, Level TE7 has yielded one of the oldest human remains recovered to date in western Europe. A hominin mid-face has recently been discovered (specimen ATE7-1)…

Meaningful citizen participation throughout the development of research projects has increased the societal impact of science. Co-creation processes promote a more significant societal impact by aligning research with societal needs. In recent years, essential advances in citizen participation in science have been identified. However, there are still critical challenges that limit citizen interaction with scientific creations. Open Access•Mikel Díaz Rodríguez, Ramon Fábregas Valcarce et al.•ARTICLE•Estudos do Quaternário /…•2021

In this paper, we deal with the locational analysis of the Cova Eirós site (Triacastela, Lugo), occupied from the Middle Palaeolithic to the present. From GIS and statistics, we intend to approach those environmental factors that define its importance as a place of occupation over time and on a recurring basis. Once we have analysed the variables that characterize the site’s patterns of use, we have verified that Cova Eirós is an important, promi…

    Open Access•Francisco-Javier García-Vadillo, Antoni Canals-Salomó et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 37

The Acheulean of the Iberian Peninsula is considered a homogeneous technocomplex within the Large Flake Acheulean (LFA) of northern African origin. In this work, we describe the lithic industry of Santa Ana Cave, interpret the territorial functions of the site and search for its technological parallels. Our results place the lithic industry of Santa Ana within the LFA. This assemblage is characterised by: 1) an association of spheroids and large …

Here we present a new site in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain): Galería de las Estatuas (GE), which provides new information about Mousterian occupations in the Iberian Plateau. The GE was an ancient entrance to the cave system, which is currently closed and sealed by a stalagmitic crust, below which a detritic sedimentary sequence of more than 2 m is found. This has been divided into five litostratigraphic units with a rich assemblage of …

Since it has been established that this was in Africa, much current research is focused on the age of the settlement of Eurasia. This work reviews three hypotheses concerning the age of the occupation of Europe. These hypotheses may be termed "Young," "Mature," and "Old" Europe, according to which systematic settlement took place either less than 500,000 year…
