Sicut mitissima satyris . Una nota testuale a Plin. Nat. 8.216
In book 8 of his Naturalis historia , Pliny the Elder mentions the particularly savage character of some monkeys. Most editions and translations of Pliny’s text maintain that the reference to the fierce nature of these animals concerns both the cynocephali and the satyri . However, in the manuscript Riccardianus 488 (R in the transmission of Pliny), a second hand, contemporary to the period in which the text was copied, added supra lineam the obs…
Aristotle on the anatomy of the heart and lungs (HA 1.17)
Tales of Imitation
Building upon new perspectives opened up by human-animal studies in the investigation of the Greco-Roman world, this article focuses on the cultural representation of interspecies learning in Greco-Roman sources. In particular, this study analyzes one of the foundational events of human culture in most societies: the introduction of the alphabet and writing. Among the many texts describing its origins, a few involve an enigmatic encounter between…
One of the most famous scenes of gambling, alea, from Roman antiquity is found in archaic Latin theater, notably in a passage from Plautus’ Curculio (“The Weevil”) in which the eponymous character of the comedy, a parasite, invokes the god Hercules before throwing knucklebones in a betting game. Several commentators of the passage had interpreted the invocation to Hercules as the expression of the parasite’s wish to succeed in obtaining the throw…
Jouer dans l’Antiquité classique/Play and Games in Classical Antiquity
The European Research Council project (Locus Ludi. The Cultural Fabric of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity [ERC AdG # 741520]) investigates how play and games provide a privileged access to past societal norms, values, identities, and collective imaginary. People play all over the world and throughout history, but they do not play the same games, nor do they attribute the same meaning and function to play. This pluridisciplinary volume inves…
Early Christian Attitudes towards Child Playing

Knucklebone Faces and Throws
The reconstruction of the culture of play and games in antiquity involves many problems of an exegetical nature, which are especially difficult to analyse because of the limited amount of encyclopaedic evidence that might provide adequate overviews and descriptions. Julius Pollux’s lexicon is an essential text in this regard. In the second half of the second century AD he wrote a synthesis of ancient knowledge, in which each notice was presented …
La sagesse de Palamède
Philosopher Henri Bortoft, in his advocacy of the principles of Goethean science, makes much the same point through a clever reversal of the phrase ‘it appears’. In the conventional and grammatically correct order of words, ‘it’ comes before ‘appears’ : the thing exists prior to its disclosure, ready and waiting to be perceived by the moving observer, whose attention is attuned to what it affords. For the farer in the labyrinth, however, attentio…
Considerazioni sullo zoonimo ΚΑΣΤΩΡ nel Papiro di Artemidoro (V6 Gallazzi/Kramer/Settis)
The Artemidorus Papyrus has a legend on the verso (V6) that bears the usual word for ‘beaver’ in ancient Greek, i.e. κάστωρ. This does not correspond to the drawing of the animal, which looks more like a dog. Through an analysis of various zoological texts, this article solves the difficulty by considering the other zoonym of the beaver, which was κυνοπόταμος, i.e. the ‘river dog’
In several texts from classical antiquity, the invention of dice and board games is associated with attempts to put an end to crisis in the political community, as the stories about Palamedes seem to show. Beside the fictional context of mythical narratives the cultural value of dice and board games enters into other discursive representations. In particular, the speech of the rhetorician Alcidamas (On the Betrayal of Palamedes, fr. 2 Avezzù) in …
