Old Persian artācā brazmaniya
[In the Daiva Inscription of Xerxes, artā - is an instrumental coordinate with the preceding acc. Auramazdām; b a r a z a m a n a iy a is to be normalized brazmaniya on the evidence of the Elamite transcription, and is nom. sg. masc. ‘prayerful, reverent’ = Skt. brahmaṇyá-ḥ ‘religious’. The clause means ‘worship Ahuramazda and Arta reverent(ly)‘. Previous views are listed with a critique.]
The Name of Hystaspes
The name Vištāspa -, which the Greeks represented by Hystaspes , belongs to a number of personages in Iranian history: the East Iranian ruler who was Zoroaster's first royal convert, the father of Darius the Great, and several minor princely descendents of Darius. That Zoroaster's patron was identical with Darius's father is most unlikely, though it has been and is still maintained by some scholars; but that problem lies outside the field of the …

Note on Atharva-Veda XX, 127, 10
Near the end of the twentieth book of the Atharva-Veda stands the group of so-called Kuntapa hymns, the first of which is the 127th of the book. This 127th'hymn falls into four distinct documents, the third of the four comprising verses 7-10, and dealing with the golden age of King Pariksit, who is an aspect of Agni.1 The text of the four stanzas, as given by Hillebrandt, Vedachrestomathie, p. 39, is as follows

Cattle-Tending and Agriculture in the Avesta
IN THE ACCOUNTS of the religion of Zoroaster and of the people among whom he expounded his new faith, we find the statement that the Persians were at that time a people who not only had herds and flocks, but tilled the soil as well. For convenience, I condense somewhat from the chapter on Agriculture in Geiger's Civilization of the Eastern Iranians:1 Only the cultivated ground is the property of Mazdah. Regions devoid of cultivation are haunted b…

Final AE in Latin Case-Forms
F. Sommer, in the revised edition of his Handbuch der lateinischen Laut- und Formenlehre, offers no explanation of the development of final -āi in the dative singular of ā -stems (= first declension) to -ae rather than to ī ; see pp. 146, 327–28. Yet the development of the long diphthong āi to ī in non-initial (= unaccented) syllables is certain in the dative-ablative plural of ā -stems, and an identical development of the long ōi is seen in the …
Survey of Linguistic Studies
One of the considerations that led to the foundation of the Linguistic Society of America, was the impression that the opportunities for training in linguistic science were inadequate and very unevenly distributed. It was hoped that we could assist in remedying the situation; and in fact, since our organization, whether through our influence or not, several universities have notably strengthened their linguistic staff
