Strategies of Survival
The kingdom of Lingga-Riau, with its dependencies of Johor and Pahang, traced its line of authority back to the earlier Malay kingdoms of Melaka, Singapore, Bintan and to the ultimate source Bukit Siguntang, Palembang. The aim of this study is to examine indigenous Malay writings in an attempt to discover how Malays expressed their identity as a people. In what context was the term Melayu used; in what types of documents did it appear; and did the concept of “Malayness” vary with time and place
Mahmud, Sultan of Riau and Lingga (1823-1864)
The life of Sultan Mahmud is described in the Tuhfat al-Nafis (The Precious Gift), a Malay text which, according to its author, Raja Hajji Ali, is intended to relate the stories of the Malay and Bugis kings and their descendants.The work opens with a synopsis of the Sejarah Melayu and continues in more detail with the history of the kingdom of Johor.The dynamic figures in the Tuhfat are the Bugis princes, whose military skill and hard-line diplom…
