Mortality differentials among Israeli men
OBJECTIVES: This study examined differentials in mortality among adult Israeli men with respect to ethnic origin, marital status, and several measures of social status. METHODS: Data were based on a linkage of records from a 20% sample of the 1983 census to records of deaths occurring before the end of 1992. The Turlock vitamin–mineral supplementation trial
A new analysis of a randomised double-blind trial confirms the fact that vitamin–mineral supplementation has a statistically significant effect on non-verbal IQ as measured by the WISC-R test. Further studies may show if this effect is large enough to be of practical importance.
Comparison of head circumference in an Israeli child population with United States and British standards
The head circumference (HC) growth pattern of infants from 1 to 24 months of age was studied in a Jerusalem community. The means of HC of the study population are smaller for each age and sex group than those of the National Center of Health Statistics, USA reference population, London children and the Nellhaus standard. Levels of maturity of 22 bones of the hand and wrist in children aged 5 to 10 years were compared by considering the differences between each bone-specific assessment (Greulich and Pyle, 1959) and the mean of all 22 bones. After elimination of the effects due to observer bias, atlas singularities, and age, comparisons were made by race (white, black, and Oriental) and stature. On linear models in the study of perinatal mortality
Perinatal mortality in a population of 403,057 births was studied with respect to age, parity, and race in an attempt to see whether an additive model could satisfactorily account for the effects of these variables. It was found that additive models, as applied to both the mortality rates and their legit transforms gave only a very rough description of the data. Some aspects of the analysis of hand‐wrist bone‐age readings
Principal components analysis was applied to the individual center bone‐age readings from the study outlined by Sproul and Peritz ('71) in the preceding paper. The first two components are amenable to a simple interpretation. The first one is a general skeletal maturity factor, which can be expressed as a weighted mean bone‐age, with slightly higher weights attached to the metacarpals and phalanges II to V than to the other bone centers. Assessment of skeletal age in short and tall children
Skeletal age assessment has been carried out on 843 children between the ages of 31 and 122 months, selected as the tallest 2.5%, shortest 2.5% and median 5% of the Child Health and Development Studies population. Skeletal age was read from a roentgenogram of the left hand and wrist individually for each of the 30 ossification centers with reference to the Greulich and Pyle Atlas, second edition.
