Judicial access to medicines for rare diseases
Rare diseases are an important cause of infant mortality, yet their care presents many challenges. Legal claims have enabled access to medicines, but there are concerns about interference in health policy and patient safety. The present study analyzed 912 lawsuits, involving 23 medicines for 18 rare diseases between 2008 and 2022. Using the texts collected by J.B.P. de Josselin de Jong as a data base, the paper describes the linguistic conditioning associated with copula forms in Negerhollands, a Dutch-lexicon Creole which was once spoken in what are now the U.S. Virgin Islands. Seven copula forms are identified: wees, bi, bin, bee, mi, a, and zero. The findings suggest that Negerhollands is similar to several other creoles in that there is a tripartite copula in the prese…
Towards a phonology of Negerhollands
Variation in Negerhollands has been viewed as an artifact of language death. This study demonstrates that (1) the heterogeneity of the superstrate, (2) the availability of the superstrate languages to the substrate population, and (3) the phonologies of the substrate languages largely account for the variation in this language, and shows that language death led not to variability, but to invariance.
