  • Rethinking Global Food Demand for 2050

    Open Access•Walter P Falcon, Rosamond L Naylor et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 44

Published estimates of 2050 food demand exhibit an enormous range of values. This paper projects a 50-60 percent increase in total global food demand between 2019 and 2050. Our analysis indicates a substantial slowing of rice demand, a growing share of palm oil in world fats and oils markets, and a continued shift to poultry as the dominant form of meat consumption. In contrast to most existing food models, we integrate fish consumption into the …

  • Food Security in an Era of Economic Volatility

    Open Access•Rosamond L Naylor, Walter P Falcon•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2010•Citada por: 10•Referências: 14

This article analyzes international commodity price movements, assesses food policies in response to price fluctuations, and explores the food security implications of price volatility on low-income groups. It focuses specifically on measurements, causes, and consequences of recent food price trends, variability around those trends, and price spikes. Combining these three components of price dynamics shows that the variation in real prices post-2…

  • Prioritizing Climate Change Adaptation Needs for Food Security in 2030

Open Access•David B Lobell, Meghan Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2008

Investments aimed at improving agricultural adaptation to climate change inevitably favor some crops and regions over others. An analysis of climate risks for crops in 12 food-insecure regions was conducted to identify adaptation priorities, based on statistical crop models and climate projections for 2030 from 20 general circulation models. Results indicate South Asia and Southern Africa as two regions that, without sufficient adaptation measure…

  • International Trade in Meat

James N Galloway, Meghan Burke et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 4

This paper provides an original account of global land, water, and nitrogen use in support of industrialized livestock production and trade, with emphasis on two of the fastest-growing sectors, pork and poultry. Our analysis focuses on trade in feed and animal products, using a new model that calculates the amount of "virtual" nitrogen, water, and land used in production but not embedded in the product. We show how key meat-importing countries, s…

  • Using climate models to improve Indonesian food security

    Walter P Falcon, Rosamond L Naylor et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Indonesian Economic…•2004•Citada por: 3•Referências: 5

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events exert significant influence on Southeast Asian rice output and markets. This paper measures ENSO effects on Indonesia's national and regional rice production and on world rice prices, using the August Niño 3.4 sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) to gauge climate variability. It shows that each degree Celsius change in the August SSTA produces a 1,318,000 metric ton effect on output and a $21/metric to…

  • Using El Niño-Southern Oscillation Climate Data to Improve Food Policy Planning in Indonesia

Rosamond L Naylor, Rosamond Naylor et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Indonesian Economic…•2002•Citada por: 3•Referências: 13

Despite the impact of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on climate in the Indo-Pacific region, models linking ENSO-based climate variability to Indonesian cereal production are not well developed. This study measures connections among sea-surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs), rainfall, and Indonesian rice and corn production from 1971 to 1998. Year-to-year August SSTA fluctuations explain about half the interannual variance in paddy pro…

    Open Access•Rosamond L Naylor, Walter P Falcon•ARTICLE•Food Policy•1995•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Urbanization is now a dominant demographic phenomenon in low- and middle-income countries. By the year 2000, half of the world's population will live in urban areas; of this half, two thirds will be in developing countries, predominantly in Asia. Whether there will be a corresponding shift of poverty from rural to urban areas is the central question of this analysis. Evidence from cross-sectional, time-series, and case data indicates that the per…
