  • Taxation of Temporary Jobs

Open Access•Pierre Cahuc, Olivier Charlot et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Referências: 5

This article analyses the consequences of the taxation of temporary jobs of short duration recently introduced in several European countries to induce firms to create more open-ended contracts and to increase the duration of jobs. The estimation of a job search and matching model on French data shows that the taxation of temporary jobs does not reach its objectives: it reduces the mean duration of jobs and decreases job creation, employment and w…

  • L'apprentissage

    Pierre Cahuc, Marc Ferracci•BOOK•L'apprentissage•2015

  • Family Values and the Regulation of Labor

Open Access•Alberto Alesina, Yann Algan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the European Economic…•2015

To be efficient, flexible labor markets require geographically mobile workers. Otherwise firms can take advantage of workers' immobility and extract rents at their expense. In cultures with strong family ties, moving away from home is costly. Thus, to limit the rents of firms and to avoid moving, individuals with strong family ties rationally choose regulated labor markets, even though regulation generates higher unemployment and lower incomes. E…

France and Spain have similar labour market institutions and their unemployment rates were both around 8% just before the Great Recession but subsequently that rate has increased to 10% in France and to 23% in Spain. In this article, we assess the part of this differential that is due to the larger gap between the firing costs of permanent and temporary contracts, and the laxer rules on the use of the latter in Spain. • Civil Society and the State

Open Access•Philippe Aghion, Yann Algan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the European Economic…•2011

In a cross-section of countries, state regulation of labor markets is negatively correlated with the quality of labor relations. In this paper, we argue that these facts reflect different ways of regulating labor markets, either through the state or through the civil society, depending on the degree of cooperation in the economy. We rationalize these facts with a model of learning of the quality of labor relations. Distrustful labor relations lea…

  • Inherited Trust and Growth

Yann Algan, Pierre Cahuc•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2010

This paper develops a new method to uncover the causal effect of trust on economic growth by focusing on the inherited component of trust and its time variation. We show that inherited trust of descendants of US immigrants is significantly influenced by the country of origin and the timing of arrival of their forebears. We thus use the inherited trust of descendants of US immigrants as a time-varying measure of inherited trust in their country of…

  • Regulation and Distrust

Philippe Aghion, Yann Algan et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2010

We document that, in a cross section of countries, government regulation is strongly negatively correlated with measures of trust. In a simple model explaining this correlation, distrust creates public demand for regulation, whereas regulation in turn discourages formation of trust, leading to multiple equilibria. A key implication of the model is that individuals in low-trust countries want more government intervention even though they know the …

  • Civic Virtue and Labor Market Institutions

Yann Algan, Pierre Cahuc•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal…•2009

We argue civic virtue plays a key role in explaining the design of public insurance against unemployment risks by solving moral hazard issues which hinder the efficiency of unemployment insurance. We show, in a simple model, that economies with stronger civic virtues are more prone to provide insurance through unemployment benefits rather than through job protection. We provide cross-country empirical evidence of a strong correlation between civi…

In this paper, we write and estimate an equilibrium model with strategic wage bargaining and on-the-job search and use it to take another look at the determinants of wages in France.

The aim of this paper is to examine, both at partial and general equilibrium, the consequences of work sharing policies, when the wages, the length of the working time and the participation rates are endogenous, in an economy where workers get utility from leisure. It is shown that the effects of a shorter working time are very different at the firm level and at the aggregate level. At a steady state, a decrease in working-time is likely to incre…

In this paper, we aim at studying the effects of experience rating on a typical european labor market with high firing costs, short term contracts and a binding minimum wage.
