Psychometric evaluation of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales in English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic Americans
The English and Spanish versions of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales have not been psychometrically evaluated for use with Hispanic Americans. Hispanic American adults ( N = 436) completed the English ( n = 210) or Spanish ( n = 226) Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales. A multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis did not support equivalent four-factor structures for Spanish- and English-speaking Hispanic Americans…
Psychosocial and neighborhood correlates of health-related quality of life
Findings from this study suggest that subjective social status and discrimination play important roles in HRQoL among Hispanics, in particular in neighborhoods with a higher density of tobacco retail outlets. This study highlights the importance of considering neighborhood context, and in particular neighborhood disadvantage, when examining the relationship between social status, discrimination and HRQoL among Hispanics. (PsycINFO Database Record…
Reliability and validity of the Perceived Stress Scale-10 in Hispanic Americans with English or Spanish language preference
This study examined the psychometric properties of the Perceived Stress Scale-10 among 436 community-dwelling Hispanic Americans with English or Spanish language preference. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis examined the factorial invariance of the Perceived Stress Scale-10 across language groups. Results supported a two-factor model (negative, positive) with equivalent response patterns and item intercepts but different factor covariances …
Multidimensional profiles of health locus of control in Hispanic Americans
Latent profile analysis identified health locus of control profiles among 436 Hispanic Americans who completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales. Results revealed four profiles: Internally Oriented-Weak, -Moderate, -Strong, and Externally Oriented. The profile groups were compared on sociocultural and demographic characteristics, health beliefs and behaviors, and physical and mental health outcomes. The Internally Oriented-Stron…
Psychometric Evaluation of the Patient Health Questionnaire–4 in Hispanic Americans
The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Patient Health Questionnaire–4 (PHQ-4), a screener of psychological distress, in English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic Americans. Hispanic American adults ( N = 436) completed the PHQ-4, which yields two subscales (Anxiety and Depression) that can be summed to create a total score. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate structural validity. The two-factor st…
Validity of the multidimensional fatigue symptom inventory-short form in an African-American community-based sample
Future research should further examine whether modifications to the MFSI-SF would, as the findings suggest, improve its validity as a measure of multidimensional fatigue in African-Americans
The Cultural Health Attributions Questionnaire (CHAQ)
This study describes the reliability and validity of scores on the Cultural Health Attributions Questionnaire (CHAQ), and proposes a refined short form. Murguía, Zea, Reisen, and Peterson (2000) developed the 24-item CHAQ to assess health beliefs among Latinos/Hispanics. The CHAQ incorporates two 12-item subscales: Equity Attributions (EA) and Behavioral-Environmental Attributions (BEA). Although the CHAQ has been published in Spanish and English…
The psychometric properties of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale in Hispanic Americans with English or Spanish language preference
The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7) is a self-report questionnaire that is widely used to screen for anxiety. The GAD-7 has been translated into numerous languages, including Spanish. Previous studies evaluating the structural validity of the English and Spanish versions indicate a unidimensional factor structure in both languages. However, the psychometric properties of the Spanish language version have yet to be evaluated in sample…
Psychometric Evaluation of the Brief Acculturation Scale for Hispanics
This study examined the psychometric properties of the Brief Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BASH), a four-item, language-based measure of acculturation. Participants in the study were 435 Hispanic Americans from a large metropolitan area with English or Spanish language preference. Internal consistency reliability was strong in both language-preference groups. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the structural val…
Health Care Access and Breast Cancer Screening Among Latinas Along the California–Mexican Border
A multigroup confirmatory factor analysis of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 among English- and Spanish-speaking Latinas
Depression is a significant problem for ethnic minorities that remains understudied partly due to a lack of strong measures with established psychometric properties. One screening tool, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), which was developed for use in primary care has also gained popularity in research settings. The reliability and validity of the PHQ-9 has been well established among predominantly Caucasian samples, in addition to many …
Research Article: Recruitment of hard-to-reach population subgroups via adaptations of the snowball sampling strategy
Nurse researchers and educators often engage in outreach to narrowly defined populations. This article offers examples of how variations on the snowball sampling recruitment strategy can be applied in the creation of culturally appropriate, community-based information dissemination efforts related to recruitment to health education programs and research studies. Examples from the primary author's program of research are provided to demonstrate ho…
Validity of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales in American Sign Language
Few instruments have been translated and validated for people who use American Sign Language (ASL) as their preferred language. This study examined the reliability and validity of a new ASL version of the widely used Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) scales. Deaf individuals ( N = 311) were shown the ASL version via videotape, and their responses were recorded. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor structure of the …
Breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and screening behaviors among African American women
Data from this study reflect a continuing need for increased breast cancer education for African American women. In light of the considerable mainstream information available related to breast cancer, these data reinforce the need for more breast cancer education programs that are clearly intended to attract the attention of African American women
Factors of Breast Cancer Screening Among Korean Immigrants in the United States
Early cancer detection among rural and urban californians
This analysis demonstrates that people in rural and urban areas have their breast, melanoma or colorectal cancers diagnosed at similar stages. Health care administrators may take this information into account in future strategic planning
Cardiovascular risk factors among Chamorros
The study provides data that will help healthcare providers, public health workers and community leaders identify where to focus their health improvement efforts for Chamorros and create culturally competent programs to promote health in this community
Health disparities and advertising content of women's magazines
To the extent that individual levels of health education and awareness can be influenced by advertising, variations in the quantity and content of health-related information among magazines read by different ethnic groups may contribute to racial disparities in health behaviors and health status
Improving the Deaf community's access to prostate and testicular cancer information
After viewing this ASL video, participants showed significant increases in cancer understanding, and the effects remained significant at the two-month follow-up. However, to achieve maximum learning in a single training session, only one topic should be covered in future educational videos

Study participants reported high adherence to mammography screening guidelines, but lower than optimal adherence to clinical …
Heterogeneity within the Asian American community
BACKGROUND: Educational interventions are grounded on scientific data and assumptions about the community to be served. While the Pan Asian community is composed of multiple, ethnic subgroups, it is often treated as a single group for which one health promotion program will be applicable for all of its cultural subgroups. Compounding this stereotypical view of the Pan Asian community, there is sparse data about the cultural subgroups' similaritie…
