Wczesnośredniowieczny handel niewolnikami w bałtycko-orientalnej strefie wymiany w świetle znalezisk kajdan I kłódek
Slavery was common in early medieval Europe with the so-called Baltic-Oriental exchange systemas one of the most important markets. There is a view that the slave trade is difficult to detect in material sources. Shackles are the most characteristic determinant of the slave trade. Shackles were believed to have been a very rare find. However, searching for new materials in old collections and publications turns out to be very productive. The grea…

L’expansion vers l’est. Aux origines de la Rus’ de Kiev
Icon in the Forest. Religious and Cultural Changes in the Polish-Rus' Medieval Borderlands in the Light of New Archaeological Finds
The authors examine a stray find of two Early Rus' miniature copper alloy icons of the middle - second half of the 13 th century found in a broad historical and cultural context in Eastern Poland. One of them is the central wing of a triptych with the image of the Mother of God Hodegetria and a Medusa Gorgon composition on the back. The other icon, also depicting the Hodegetria and the Child with an unfolded scroll, is extremely unique. This icon…
Ołów i władza
The article considers the economic and political use of small lead seals (tag seals) to validate different kinds of social relations in early medieval Poland and Rus’. Originated in Antiquity, the practice of sealing peaked in Byzantium from where it spread to Early Rus’. This is reflected, for example, in the use in late 11th-late 14th centuries of small lead seals referred to as the “Drohiczyn type”. In this paper I put forward an opinion that …
Ladoga and Wolin as Nodal Centers of Trans-Baltic Contacts between Polish Lands and North-West of Eastern Europe in the 10th Century
The article deals with the Baltic-Oriental exchange system between early Piasts State and north-western Early Rus’ in the 9th—10th century as an element of a great communication artery. Ladoga and Wolin played a leading role of nodal centers in this communication. The inflow of Arabic dirhams to the Western Slavic lands was the main material determinant of contacts. Another direction of these relations is demonstrated by ceramic vessels specific …
Small lead seals from Drochiczyn and small lead seals of “Drochiczyn type”
The article argues the commercial and fiscal nature of medieval small lead seals. For the first time, seal tags of the Piast dynasty are attested. Their symbols correlated with Polish Hohlpfennigs. The concentration of Rus’ and Polish seals on the border may indicate its dual jurisdiction. The practice of European small lead seals is regarded as transfers of the Byzantine tradition
Fragments of a steatite icon (diptych wing) with the Great Feasts cycle excavated in Chełm (eastern Poland)
The paper presents fragments of a Byzantine icon discovered in 2015 during regular archaeological excavations carried out in Chełm, eastern Poland. Iconographic analyses allow the nine surviving fragments to be interpreted as belonging to a diptych wing with the Great Feasts cycle. The icon represents archaic iconography of the subject, with the scene of Transfiguration placed after Entry into Jerusalem and before the Crucifixion. The artefact wa…

Beyond Beauty. Byzantine steatite icon from Chełm. Archaeology, Petrography and Traceology
A fragmentarily preserved Byzantine icon made of steatite was discovered in 2015 during regular excavations in Chełm, eastern Poland. Identified as the left wing of a diptych illustrating the Twelve Great Feasts and created at the close of the 12 th century, the find is one of the most important and beautiful Byzantine artefacts to have been found in Poland. The icon was uncovered within the confines of the palace complex which was created by Dan…
Ryurik Gorodishche, Yaroslavovo Dvorishche and Novgorod the Great
The paper presents a hypothesis of the origin of Novgorod. The decrease of Gorodishche in the 890–930s corresponded to the emergence of settlements at Torgovaya Side. Its revival in the 930–950s was synchronous to the ag- glomeration at Sofiyskaya Side. The appearance of the Princely Court near the Market and the bridge over the Volkhov in the 970s and the construction of the Detinets in the 11th century completed the formation of the town
The rise of Novgorod revisited
This article deals with the problem of the cultural, political and ethnic characteristics of the first settlers of Novgorod. The previous historiography is critically reviewed. The reappraisal of the archaeological reports and collections of 1950s-2000s years significantly increases the number and categories of Scandinavian objects, while the Slavonic component of early Novgorod remains unclear. The Scandinavians should be counted among the found…
