  • Environmental Factors and Childhood Fever in Areas of the Ouagadougou Health and Demographic Surveillance System, Burkina Faso

Open Access•Franklin Bouba Djourdebbé, Stéphanie Dos Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2015

Using data on 825 under-5 children from the Ouagadougou Health and Demographic Surveillance System collected in 2010, this article examines the effects of aspects of the immediate environment on childhood fever. Logit regression models were estimated to assess the effects of the quality of the local environment on the probability that a child is reported to have had a fever in the two weeks preceding the survey, after controlling for various demo…

  • Fertility Decline and Child Schooling in Urban Settings of Burkina Faso

Open Access•Mariam Bougma, Moussa Bougma et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2015•Citada por: 8•Referências: 55

As evidenced in Western rich countries, Asia, and Latin America, lower fertility allows couples to invest more in each of their children’s schooling. This postulate is the key rationale of family planning policies in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, most studies on Africa have found no correlation or even a positive relationship between the number of children in a family and their educational attainment. These mixed results are usually explained by Afric…

  • Fertility Limitation and Child Schooling in Ouagadougou

Open Access•Mariam Bougma, Moussa Bougma et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 47

Using original data collected in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, this study investigates evidence for the competing theories that fertility reductions increase children's education through either the quantity–quality tradeoff (intentionally choosing smaller families to make greater investments in education and other indicators of child quality) or resource dilution (having more children reduces resources available per child, regardless of intentionali…

    Thomas Legrand, Thomas K Legrand•ARTICLE•Hermès•2010

  • The impact of childhood mortality on Fertility in six rural Thanas of Bangladesh

    Open Access•Mian Bazle Hossain, Jonathan F Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2007•Citada por: 18•Referências: 26

In this article, we examine the relationship between child mortality and subsequent fertility using prospective longitudinal data on births and childhood deaths occurring to nearly 8,000 Bangladeshi mothers observed over the 1982–1993 period, a time of rapid fertility decline. Generalized hazard-regression analyses are employed to assess the effect of infant and child mortality on the hazard of conception, with controls for birth order and matern…

  • Reproductive Decision Making and the HIV/Aids Epidemic in Zimbabwe

Mira Grieser, J Gittelsohn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2001•Citada por: 10•Referências: 18

The fertility-stimulating effect of high rates of child mortality on reproductive decision making (RDM) is a central tenet of population studies, yet the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on RDM have not been thoroughly explored in the literature. This paper investigates how RDM is articulated in the context of high HIV/AIDS prevalence in Zimbabwe. Using qualitative methods (35 focus groups and 46 in-depth interviews), we found that childbearing i…

  • The Effect of Fertility Reductions on Infant and Child Mortality

Thomas Legrand, Thomas K Legrand et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1996•Citada por: 17

The role of family planning programmes and declining fertility in improving infant and child survival has been the subject of considerable debate. In this paper, we analyse data from Matlab, Bangladesh, to assess the net effect of falling total fertility on the mortality rates of young children. A real time-series models are estimated to determine the role of fertility decline after having controlled for the effects of other health service interv…

  • The determinants of men's retirement behaviour in Brazil

Thomas Legrand, Thomas K Legrand•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1995

This article describes the Brazilian social security system, assesses its retirement incentives, and uses 1980 census data to study the effects of the system and of other variables on men's retirement. Simulations show that the system can potentially have strong effects on retirement, and census data indicate that it significantly influenced male retirement in the expected directions. Self‐employed workers and employers have much lower retirement…

  • Teenage Pregnancy and Child Health in the Urban Sahel

Thomas Legrand, Thomas K Legrand et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1993•Citada por: 8

Longitudinal data for more than 20,000 live births in the cities of Bamako (Mali) and Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) are used to study the effects of young maternal age (less than 18 years and 18-19) on birth weight, child health care and feeding behavior, and child mortality, after controlling for other socioeconomic and demographic factors. Teenage pregnancies are associated with significantly worse prenatal health care and vaccination behavior,…
