  • Weaponized Licensure

Open Access•Elene Lam, Vincent Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Race Inquiry•2024

This article delves into the recent efforts of Asian migrant massage and sex workers in the Town of Newmarket, Ontario, and their struggle against a recently amended Personal Wellness Establishments (PWE) By-law. It starts with a historical overview of municipal licensing schemes and legislated migration controls in Canada, used to justify increased surveillance, control movement, and deny Asian women entry into Canada, before illustrating the en…

  • Contested Terrains

Open Access•Amanda De Lisio, Michael Silk et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•Referências: 13

Sport mega-events (SMEs) remake cities as global brandscapes of leisured consumption; reliant in part upon securitization designed to create an atmosphere free from disturbance and render invisible those “abject” populations who might puncture the tourist bubble that surrounds stadia and fan-zones. Yet, such “shiny” cityspaces are not devoid of complexity, contestation, and compunction. In this paper, we draw on extensive ethnographic- and commun…

  • Shelter in Place

Open Access•Amanda De Lisio, Caroline Fusco et al.•ARTICLE•ACME - Annali della Facoltà di…•2024•Referências: 42

In this article, we interrogate the representation and construction of public park space in a settler colonial city: Toronto/Tkaronto. First, we draw on the relationship between urban neoliberalism and prudentialism to demonstrate the way public health authorities in Toronto/Tkaronto promoted a neoliberal ideology of prudentialism that emphasized individual action (e.g., social distancing, personal hygiene, sheltering in place) in response to the…

  • Sport mega-event fantasies to financialization

Open Access•Zainab Bhimani, Amanda De Lisio•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2023

This paper examines the relationship between sport mega-event construction and the financialization of housing in Rio de Janeiro. It focuses on the area of Porto Maravilha, constructed prior to the 2016 Olympic Games, and the particular use of the 2001 federal Statute of City and 1995 Strategic Plan for Rio de Janeiro to create new possibilities for neoliberal-capitalist expansion, initially disguised as democratized access to land yet, in effect…

  • Rights, not rescue

    Open Access•Benton J Oliver, Amanda De Lisio•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 43

We examine the impact of fantasies used in the redevelopment of sport mega-event cities on host communities; particularly as related to the male-dominated FIFA World Cup and forced prostitution. We start with a discussion of event fantasies, particularly those that circulate in relation to humanitarian aid and the alleged involvement of women and children in forced labour and sexual exploitation. We trace these fantasies across several FIFA host …

  • Fifa/IOC-Sanctioned Development and the Imminence of Erotic Space

Open Access•Amanda De Lisio, João Gabriel R Sodré•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 36

Based on ethnographic research conducted since April 2014, this paper will examine the intersection between mega-event security apparatuses, event-led urbanism, and local geographies of desire. We argue that urban sanitisation strategies (particularly those derived from a constellation of foreign interests) threaten local geographies of desire but remain dependent upon erotic space and subjectivities in (trans)national exchange and everyday econo…

  • “Pomba Gira keeps an eye on us”

Open Access•Thadeus Blanchette, Thaddeus Blanchette et al.•ARTICLE•Studia Religiologica•2018

) and Ruth Landes' ethnography City of Women (2006 [1947]) both highlight how African-Brazilian religions have maintained connections to sexual practices considered to be "perverse" by Christian moralities. The present article describes the presence of the orixs in today's brothels in Rio de Janeiro. We emphasize the use of Candombl and Umbanda as counter-hegemonic forms of spirituality which protect women involved in the sale of sex and are used…

  • Economies of (Alleged) Deviance

    Open Access•Amanda De Lisio, P Hubbard et al.•ARTICLE•Sexuality Research and Social…•2018•Citada por: 6•Referências: 15

Based on ethnographic data collected during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this article is interested to examine urban processes which reinvent the changing (sexual) landscape. Focusing on the way (host) cities shape sex work both imaginatively and physically, we explore the (lived) realities of neoliberal imaginaries that shape urban space. Often thought to exist in the urban shadow as an absent-presenc…
