Effects of acetolysis on starch granules
Chemical residue evidence in Leon Plain pottery from the Toyah phase (1300–1650 CE) in the American Southern Plains
Bariatric surgery as a proxy for nutritional stress in stable isotope investigations of archaeological populations
Analysis of a coprolite from Conejo Shelter, Texas
Evidence of feasting in the Southern Plains
Feasting is an important socio-economic system adopted by diverse groups worldwide. Feasting traditions among mobile groups, however, have been difficult to recognize archaeologically. Using regional data of cooking features, trade, and ethnohistorical accounts, I argue that such a change in socio-economic systems can be recognized though the exploration of the Toyah archaeological culture in central and south Texas on the Southern Plains, 1250–1…
Teaching Anthropological Concepts of Race in Higher Education
Racialism is the belief that humans can be divided into distinct races that are biological fact and can determine many traits of individuals. This concept, while persistent, has been refuted by biological and social science, which indicates that the cultural conception of race is neither a biological reality nor determinant. The discipline of anthropology is well positioned to explain nuances in biological and cultural diversity, but employing th…
Finding Children Without Toys
The idea that children's activities may be seen through traditionally adult material culture is rarely explored in archaeological analyses. This paper advocates a more nuanced interpretation of assemblages in archaeological datasets that highlights children and their activities. Discussions of children in the archaeological record are often restricted to material culture attributed specifically to them, such as toys and clothing. Archaeological r…
Airborne starch dispersal from stone grinding
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Fermentation Effects on Pollen
Pollen is the reproductive agent of flowering plants; palynology is utilized by archaeologists because sporopollenin, a major component in the exine of pollen grains, is resistant to decay and morphologically distinctive. Wine, beer, and mead have been identified in the archaeological record by palynological assessment due to indicator species or due to a pollen profile similar to that recovered from honey, a common source of sugar in a variety o…
