A Window into 40,000 Years of the Prehistory of Iberia
Since 1996, the El Mirón Cave Prehistoric Project in Cantabria, Spain, has been uncovering and studying an ever-increasing variety of finds. These range from “classic” ones such as artifacts, works of portable art, and faunal remains to unique ones—notably a Magdalenian-age human burial—to very novel ancient DNA discoveries in a long stratigraphic sequence spanning from the Mousterian through the Bronze Age, dated by 102 14C assays between >46,00…
Bone weathering in an Atlantic environment
Weathering constitutes one of the most investigated taphonomic processes for understanding the formation of archaeological and paleontological assemblages. Despite being studied for decades through numerous monitoring experiments, no homogeneous methodology exists to compare the results obtained in different regions and climates. Here, we present the protocols and the preliminary results of an experimental research started four years ago in a coa…
Structuring domestic space in the Lower Magdalenian
Documenting the intentional structuring of space by hunter-gatherers can be challenging, especially in complex cave contexts. One approach is the spatial analysis of discard patterns. Here, the authors consider the spatial distribution of faunal remains from the Lower Magdalenian Level 115 in El Mirón Cave, Cantabria, to assess a possible structuring function for an unusual alignment of rocks. Although it is impossible to determine whether the al…
Assessing the Chronostratigraphy of El Mirón Cave, Cantabrian Spain
El Mirón is an important archaeological cave site in Cantabria (Spain) with a stratigraphy covering the late Middle Paleolithic to the Modern Period. The Magdalenian levels are especially rich in artifacts, faunal remains, and features, and included the burial of an adult female (“the Red Lady”), as well as other scattered human remains, while the Neolithic levels contained the oldest combined evidence of ceramics, domesticated grain and livestoc…

New Dates for the Solutrean and Magdalenian of Cantabrian Spain
This sixth date list for the prehistoric site of El Mirón Cave (Cantabria, Spain) reports on new age determinations for the earliest and last Solutrean occupations (20.4 and 18.0 14 C kyr BP) and for a Lower/Initial Magdalenian level with a possible rock wall (16.75 14 C kyr BP). The site has now been dated by 92 radiocarbon ( 14 C) assays. In addition, to help resolve inconsistencies in the 14 C chronology of La Riera Cave (Asturias)—the first P…

Cores, Core-scrapers, and Bladelet Production during the Lower Magdalenian Occupations of El Mirón Cave, Cantabrian Spain
Among the defining characteristics of the Cantabrian (Spain) Lower Magdalenian (19.2–17.5 cal kya), along with portable art works, are so-called “nucleiform endscrapers.” These small cores often display one or more regularized edges that could indicate a secondary function as scrapers. Although this has been demonstrated microscopically to be the case at some sites, it is generally not true in a large sample from Level 17, a massive Lower Magdale…
El Mirón Cave (Ramales, Cantabria, Spain) Date List V
This fifth date list for the long cultural sequence in El Mirón Cave (Cantabria, Spain) reports on new radiocarbon assays for the Middle Paleolithic and Lower Magdalenian levels, ranging from about >45 to 15 uncalibrated kyr

Radiocarbon Dating the Late Upper Paleolithic of Cantabrian Spain
This fourth date list for the long cultural sequence in El Mirón Cave (Cantabria, Spain) reports on 19 new AMS assays for Solutrean, Initial, Lower, and Middle Magdalenian and Azilian levels, ranging from about 19 to 11 uncalibrated kyr. Key results are provision of further precision on the transition between the Solutrean and Magdalenian at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum and the very exact dating of a Magdalenian human burial and its relati…
Conjuntos de artefactos del Magdaleniense inicial en la Cueva de El Mirón (Ramales de la Victoria, Cantabria, España)
El Mirón Cave, in the Cantabrian Cordillera near the border between Cantabria and Vizcaya, contains a long sequence of radiocarbon-dated Magdalenian and Azilian levels. Lying between a series of Solutrean levels and a major, multi-level horizon pertaining to the classic Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian –CLM–, are several layers dating between c. 17-16 uncal. kya –c. 20.5-19 cal. kya– and lacking traditional hallmarks of the CLM –e.g., scapulae with s…
La ocupación de la costa durante el Mesolítico en el Oriente de Asturias
The discovery of Paracentrotus lividus remains in archaeological sites is an important source of information that is not always possible to assess due to the difficulty of quantifying the debris and its contribution to the overall study. Recently, several authors have designed systems for the MNI calculation based on the mouthparts of the sea urchin or interspecific identification systems based on the genital tract. This paper presents an MNI cal…

Last Glacial Human Settlement in Eastern Cantabria (Northern Spain)
Extraordinary Early Magdalenian finds from El Mirón Cave, Cantabria (Spain)
The authors describe three splendid and newly discovered objects from the Upper Palaeolithic in northern Spain: an engraved scapula, a possible spearthrower and a decorated stone pendant. As well as adding to the corpus of iconic artefacts from the period, these new finds have the special virtue of being meticulously excavated and recorded in context
Further Radiocarbon Dates for the Upper Paleolithic of El Mirón Cave (Ramales De La Victoria, Cantabria, Spain)
This article expands the date list from the Stone Age cave site of El Mirón in the Cantabrian Cordillera of northern Spain to a total of 62 radiocarbon determinations, one of the longest series from a single prehistoric site in Iberia. All the assays (accelerator mass spectrometry [AMS] and conventional, run on charcoal and bone collagen) were done by a single laboratory (Geochron, GX). The 11 new dates confirm 1) the late spread of Neolithic eco…

The Magdalenian settlement of the Cantabrian region (Northern Spain)
Lower Magdalenian secondary human burial in El Mirón Cave, Cantabria, Spain
The authors describe the discovery of the first human burial of Magdalenian age to be found in the Iberian Peninsula-the partial skeleton of a young adult whose bones were stained with red ochre. The burial was well stratified in a sequence at the vestibule rear running from the Mousterian to the Mesolithic, and was adjacent to a large block that had fallen from the cave roof and been subsequently engraved. A preliminary AMS radiocarbon date on a…

The Radiocarbon Chronology of El Mirón Cave (Cantabria, Spain)
Three additional radiocarbon assays were run on samples from 3 levels lying below the classic (±15,500 BP) Lower Cantabrian Magdalenian horizon in the outer vestibule excavation area of El Mirón Cave in the Cantabrian Cordillera of northern Spain. Although the central tendencies of the new dates are out of stratigraphic order, they are consonant with the post-Solutrean, Initial Magdalenian period both in El Mirón and in the Cantabrian region, ind…
Early Magdalenian Variability
One of the most important and longstanding debates in Paleolithic prehistory is over the significance of interassemblage variability. The problem of variability among artifact assemblages pertaining to the Lower Cantabrian Magdalenian phenomenon (ca. 16,000–14,000 uncalibrated years B.P.) is much like the Mousterian facies question, but with far less international attention. Are the different assemblage types temporal, stylistic, or functional in…

Thinking About ‘Style’ in the ‘Post‐stylistic Era’
Over the past decade, new radiocarbon dating from several art caves has conflicted with the traditional stylistic sequence of Palaeolithic art. Using Chauvet as a paradigm, some archaeologists have suggested that stylistic approaches to Palaeolithic art should be rejected in favour of more sophisticated methods, such as AMS radiocarbon dating. Contrary to this proposal, we suggest that the high antiquity of the Chauvet paintings (dated to c .32,0…

Redefining Neanderthals and Art
Since the late 1990s, a number of specialists have proposed a ‘multiple species model’ to explain the origins of behavioural modernity. This model establishes that most of the traits defining modern behaviour, including ornaments and art, are not exclusive to modern humans, but arose among anatomically ‘non-modern’ populations, like the late Neanderthals of Europe. This paper proposes that the emergence of this multiple species model is related t…
