Positive Influences
Despite medical advances having made HIV a survivable condition, HIV persists as the 11th leading cause of death among young Black women. Enhancing the quality of care engagement through beneficial patient-provider relationships can close gaps in retention and adherence, enabling long, healthy lives. Using constructivist grounded theory informed by an established framework for patient-centered care in complex cancer settings and insight from loca…
Multistakeholder Perceptions of Priorities in Primary Care as a Source of Local Innovation
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to compare the needs and priorities of multiple stakeholder groups as a source of local innovation to improve primary care. Focus groups were conducted with 44 members of 7 primary care stakeholder groups associated with a large health system and its academic and community networks. Data were analyzed using directed content analysis. Initial categories for the content analysis were drawn from …
Perceived Balance, Balance Performance, and Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Objectives: To examine the extent to which older adults’ perceived balance, a balance performance test, and fear of falling (FOF) were associated with falls in the last month. Methods: The Health Belief Model served as the theoretical framework. A retrospective, cross-sectional, secondary analysis using data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study was conducted ( N = 7499). Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the …
Mirabella at Arizona State University
University-based retirement communities (UBRCs) are a relatively recent addition to housing options for older adults. The case example of a new UBRC, Mirabella at Arizona State University (ASU), is presented within the context of Age-Friendly University (AFU) principles and New American University design aspirations. We provide an overview of the planning process, describe initial collaborations between Mirabella and research faculty, and outline…
Physical Activity Among Predominantly White Middle-Aged and Older US Adults During the Sars-CoV-2 Pandemic
Background: The first COVID-19 case in the US was diagnosed late January 2020. In the subsequent months, cases grew exponentially. By March 2020, SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19) was a global pandemic and the US declared a national emergency. To mitigate transmission, federal guidelines were established for social and physical distancing. These events disrupted daily routines of individuals around the world, including Ameri…
Perceived cultural acceptability and comfort with affectionate touch
Ethnographic descriptions suggest that cultures differ in the extent to which they value physical touch and its acceptability in different kinds of social relationships. For example, compared to European American (EA) culture, Mexican culture is described as placing greater emphasis on warm interpersonal interactions, in which touch may play an important part. We tested this notion empirically by assessing attitudes about touch among 271 Mexican …
Collective Care
Purpose: Specific stressors associated with caregiving in Mexican American (MA) families are not well documented, yet caregiving issues are paramount because informal care for parents is central to their culture. Although MA families who band together to provide care for one member are not unique, the literature does not describe the phenomenon of collective caregiving, which may be widespread but unrecognized. This article describes these unders…
Modern Family
This report extends knowledge about the informal caregiving trajectory in Mexican American (MA) families, constituting the second known empirical study of the emerging phenomenon of personal care by (MA) sons for their aging mothers, previously reported by our research team. It uses life course perspective (LCP) to compare caregiving patterns over time through case-based comparative-historical methods. “Historical” within-case analysis searches f…
Worry Among Mexican American Caregivers of Community-Dwelling Elders
This mixed methods, multi-site, National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)-funded, interdisciplinary, descriptive study aimed to identify expressions of worry in qualitative data obtained from caregiving Mexican American (MA) families assisting older adults. The purpose of this portion of the inquiry was to determine how worry is expressed, what happens to caregivers when they worry, and what adaptive strategies they used. We examined semi-str…
Perceived Threat of Alzheimer’s Disease Among Chinese American Older Adults
Findings support inclusion of key factors in the SHBM relevant to perceived threat of AD and help enrich the understanding of AD literacy from both scientific and cultural perspectives. AD education programs and interventions should help address crucial cultural beliefs related to AD and the emotional consequences (e.g., concerns or fear of AD) that might be due to the exposure to AD factual knowledge, particularly for those with limited educatio…
Use of Theoretical Frameworks as a Pragmatic Guide for Mixed Methods Studies
There is a growing acceptance of the utility of mixed methods in health sciences but there is no widely accepted set of ideas in regard to use of a conceptual or theoretical framework to guide inquiry. Few mixed methods health science articles report the use of such a framework. Lack of available conceptual maps provided by theoretical frameworks, necessary intricacy of design, and the qualitative "black box" tradition all contribute to a dearth …
Utility of the Life Course Perspective in Research With Mexican American Caregivers of Older Adults
Research on caregiving of elders in Mexican American families is urgently needed. We know little about family caregivers, family transitions in relation to the caregiving role, reciprocal impact of caregivers and care recipients on one another, adaptive strategies, positive benefits of caregiving (caregiver gain), specific caregiving burdens, or supportive interventions for family caregiving. Theory derivation using the concepts and structure of …
Exploring Interventions for LGBT Caregivers
LGBT caregiving for midlife and older adults facing chronic illness or disability as well as the development and evaluation of interventions targeting LGBT caregivers remains fundamentally unexplored. Caregivers regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities leading to increased stress and distress. However, largely due to discrimination and discriminatory policies, many LGBT caregivers …
Social Marketing as a Framework for Recruitment
Strategies to enhance recruitment are often undertaken without a comprehensive plan. A social marketing plan provides a framework to map out the steps in recruitment that will be needed and to plan for allocations of time, staff, and resources
Religious coping among Caucasian and Latina dementia caregivers.
