Experiments with replicas of Early Upper Paleolithic edge-ground stone axes and adzes provide criteria for identifying tool functions
Konso-Gardula, Ethiopia
Lithic technology, chronology, and marine shells from Wadi Aghar, southern Jordan, and Initial Upper Paleolithic behaviors in the southern inland Levant
Were tanged points mechanically delivered armatures? Functional and morphometric analyses of tanged points from an Upper Paleolithic site at Jingeuneul, Korea
A total of 99 tanged points have been unearthed from the Jingeuneul site in Jinan-gun, Korea. The exceptionally large number of tanged points suggests a specific site function at this location. Even though the tanged point is one of the representative tool types for Korean Upper Paleolithic assemblages, the function of this tool is not well known because no systematic use-wear analyses have yet been undertaken. Here, we conduct a use-wear analysi…
Ecological Niche and Least-Cost Path Analyses to Estimate Optimal Migration Routes of Initial Upper Palaeolithic Populations to Eurasia
Special issue
Early Upper Paleolithic blade technology in the Japanese Archipelago
Experiments in Fracture Patterns and Impact Velocity with Replica Hunting Weapons from Japan
Summary and Conclusions
Evidence for the use of the bow-and-arrow technology by the first modern humans in the Japanese islands
Manufacturing bow-and-arrow is an intricate procedure requiring multistage planning. Because of the high complexity of this innovation, the distribution of bow-and-arrow technology reflects a dispersal of human groups that possessed the technology rather than multiple independent origins. Although indirect evidence for bow-and-arrow technology prior to 60 ka has been recovered from Middle Stone Age levels at Sibudu Cave, South Africa, additional …
Multidisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Stone Age Weaponry
Backed point experiments for identifying mechanically-delivered armatures
Newly discovered cercopithecid, equid and other mammalian fossils from the Chorora Formation, Ethiopia
International audience
Functional Variability in Magdalenian of North-Western Europe
Functional variability in the Magdalenian of north-western Europe
Bois Laiterie revisited
Mobility and Lithic Economy in the Terminal Pleistocene of Central Honshu
During the Terminal Pleistocene in central Honshu, which coincided temporally with the emergence of pottery, lithic raw material reduction sequences ceased to be rational and economical, instead becoming expedient and wasteful. Furthermore, hunter-gatherers had stopped importing lithic raw materials over long distances, and attempts made previously to attain a maximum number of usable edges on artifacts upon one nodule had ceased. Their reduction…
