Drug-related death rates associated with prescribed and illicit benzodiazepine exposure among people receiving opioid-agonist treatment in Scotland, 2015 to 2020
BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) reduces mortality among individuals with opioid dependence. Benzodiazepine co-prescribing with OAT has previously been associated with increased rates of drug-related death (DRD). In Scotland, rising DRD rates have coincided with increasing detection of illicit benzodiazepines at post-mortem. We quantified DRD rates associated with prescribed and baseline self-reported illicit benzodiazepine exposure amo…
Covid-19 vaccination uptake and risk of severe Covid-19 disease among those in, and released from, prison care in Scotland
Our findings highlight the important role of prisons in facilitating rapid high coverage of vaccination, involving accelerated schedules where appropriate, to help mitigate the raised risk of severe disease outcomes among both those incarcerated and released into the community
Increased risk of non-fatal overdose associated with non-prescribed benzodiazepine use in Scotland, UK
This study found a high prevalence of non-prescribed benzodiazepine use among a national sample of PWID in Scotland. Prevalence was highest among populations known to be at increased risk of drug-related death and use was strongly associated with overdose. These novel findings highlight the scale of the non-prescribed benzodiazepine issue Scotland faces, and the urgency required to expand its harm reduction infrastructure to address this unique e…
Risk of drug-related mortality among people receiving opioid-agonist treatment during the Covid-19 pandemic in Scotland
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland, DRD rates remained stable following a three-fold rise since 2011-13. The protective effect of OAT was sustained during the pandemic, which highlights the importance of maintaining access to OAT during public health crises
Evaluating the effect of direct-acting antiviral agent treatment scale-up on Hepatitis C virus prevalence among people who inject drugs in UK
Real-world evidence showing substantial reductions in chronic HCV associated with increase of HCV treatment scale-up in the community thus supporting the effectiveness of HCV treatment as prevention in people who inject drugs
Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on HIV Test Uptake Among People Who Inject Drugs in the Context of an HIV Outbreak
Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, has been experiencing an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs (PWID) since 2015. A key focus of the public health response has been to increase HIV testing among those at risk of infection. Our aim was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on HIV testing among PWID in Glasgow. HIV test uptake in the last 12 months was quantified among: (1) PWID recruited in six Needle Exchange Surveillance Initiative (NESI) surv…
Sars-CoV-2 vaccine uptake and risks of severe Covid-19 disease among people prescribed opioid agonist therapy in Scotland
BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence quantifying the risk of severe COVID-19 disease among people with opioid dependence. We examined vaccine uptake and severe disease (admission to critical care or death with COVID-19) among individuals prescribed opioid agonist therapy (OAT). METHOD: A case-control design was used to examine vaccine uptake in those prescribed OAT compared with the general population, and the association between severe disease …
Interventions to prevent HIV and Hepatitis C among people who inject drugs
Evaluation of the scale-up of HIV testing among people who inject drugs in Scotland in the context of an ongoing HIV outbreak
The uptake of foil from needle and syringe provision services and its role in smoking or snorting heroin among people who inject drugs in Scotland
High willingness to use drug consumption rooms among people who inject drugs in Scotland
The vast majority of PWID at greatest risk of drug-related harm in Glasgow and elsewhere in Scotland would be willing to use a DCR, supporting proposals for the introduction of DCRs nationally
Increased risk of HIV and other drug-related harms associated with injecting in public places
These findings highlight the need to address the additional harms observed among people who inject in public places and provide evidence to inform proposals in the UK and elsewhere to introduce facilities that offer safer drug consumption environments
Incarceration history and risk of HIV and hepatitis C virus acquisition among people who inject drugs
Needle and syringe programmes and opioid substitution therapy for preventing HCV transmission among people who inject drugs
Determinants of hepatitis C antiviral effectiveness awareness among people who inject drugs in the direct-acting antiviral era
Spore forming bacteria infections and people who inject drugs
Expansion of HCV treatment access to people who have injected drugs through effective translation of research into public health policy
Seven years have elapsed since the Scottish Government launched its Hepatitis C Action Plan - a Plan to improve services to prevent transmission of infection, particularly among people who inject drugs (PWID), identify those infected and ensure those infected receive optimal treatment. The Plan was underpinned by industrial scale funding (around £100 million, in addition to the general NHS funding, will have been invested by 2015), and a web of a…
Interventions to prevent HIV and Hepatitis C in people who inject drugs
Association between harm reduction intervention uptake and recent hepatitis C infection among people who inject drugs attending sites that provide sterile injecting equipment in Scotland
A Decade of Spore-Forming Bacterial Infections Among European Injecting Drug Users
The recent anthrax outbreak among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Europe has highlighted an ongoing problem with severe illness resulting from spore-forming bacteria in IDUs. We collated the numbers of cases of 4 bacterial illnesses (botulism, tetanus, Clostridium novyi, and anthrax) in European IDUs for 2000 to 2009 and calculated population rates. Six countries reported 367 cases; rates varied from 0.03 to 7.54 per million people. Most cases (92…
P1-44 Application of a novel method to estimate incidence of hepatitis C among injecting drug users in Scotland
Background Prevalence of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Scotland is high. Through an HCV Action Plan, the Scottish Government has invested significantly in harm reduction interventions with the goal of reducing HCV transmission among IDUs. In evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, estimates of the incidence, rather than the prevalence, of HCV are essential. The traditional approach to measuring incidence—…
