Needle and syringe coverage per injection and factors associated with needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm Needle and Syringe Program, 2013–2023
BACKGROUND: Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP) are a cornerstone of harm reduction, yet evidence on whether they adequately meet injection-related needs and reduce needle sharing in real-world settings, particularly where NSP were introduced late, remains limited. We examined needles to injection coverage and predictors of needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm NSP between 2013 and 2023. METHODS: Using data from a national clinical monitori…
Opioid overdose and mortality among people who use or inject drugs in Myanmar
Opioid overdose is common and disproportionately affects people outside existing programs. Expanding peer‐led and mobile outreach, tailoring referral pathways for migrants, broadening community naloxone distribution, and securing sustained domestic financing are urgent priorities
Willingness and contextual considerations for supervised consumption sites
Our results suggest high SCS acceptability among a marginalised cohort of people who inject drugs in Stockholm. Results confirm and extend prior research by illuminating their perceptions, including important preferences to consider when designing a future SCS in Sweden
Changes in hepatitis C virus prevalence and incidence among people who inject drugs in the direct acting antiviral era
The prevalence of HCV was halved in PWID as unrestricted DAA treatment became available and NSP was established in Stockholm. However, overall incidence was not reduced. To meet the WHO incidence goal, targeting PWID with high injection risk behaviors for testing and treatment is essential, along with engagement in harm reduction services
Legal Minors Who Inject
BACKGROUND: Injection drug use among legal minors is under-researched. Although the population may be small in absolute terms, treatment needs may be greater than for those who began injecting as adults. Such knowledge may help tailor services more effectively. Previous research tends to use selective samples or focuses solely on medical indicators. The present study uses a larger sample drawn from national register data in Sweden over a 9-year p…
Take-Home Naloxone and risk management from the perspective of people who survived an opioid overdose in Stockholm — An analysis informed by drug, set and setting
The THN program has influenced "drug, set and setting" for participants, providing increased safety at drug-intake and transferring overdose management and the burden of care to the community. The lived experience of participants also exposes the limitations of THN indicating that there are additional unmet needs beyond THN programs, particularly in terms of "setting
Quality-adjusted life years among people who inject drugs in a needle syringe program in Sweden
This study increase knowledge of what instruments are most suitable to measure health among PWID. This is of great importance when evaluating effects of public health and preventive measures in the PWID population
A rapid assessment of take-home naloxone provision during Covid-19 in Europe
Through programme innovation supported by public guidelines, many European THN programmes managed to ensure stable or even increased THN provision during the pandemic, despite social distancing and stay-at-home orders affecting client mobility
A prospective cohort study of risk behaviours, retention and loss to follow-up over 5 years among women and men in a needle exchange program in Stockholm, Sweden
Despite better NEP compliance among WWID, high injection and sexual risk behaviours in both gender-subgroups, especially in intimate relationships, suggests ongoing HCV and HIV-infection risks. Subgroup-variation in the NEP continuum of care warrants more gender-disaggregated research and tailoring gender-sensitive services may improve prevention, health and retention outcomes
