Thoughts of Death or Self-injury, Non-same-day ART Initiation, and 2-year Incidence of Disengagement from Care Among People Entering HIV Care in Cameroon
Thoughts of death or self-injury and the clinical implications of such thoughts remain largely underassessed among people with HIV (PWH) in Africa. As strong predictors of suicidal ideation and death by suicide, it is paramount to understand these risk indicators, particularly in populations with heightened susceptibility to poor mental health. We aimed to characterize thoughts of death or self-injury (i.e., self-injurious thoughts) and their rel…
Mental health-related help-seeking and the role of HIV care providers
Mental health disorders are common among people with HIV (PWH), and the overwhelming majority of PWH with mental health disorders do not receive evidence-based mental health care. One promising strategy to increase access to evidence-based mental health care for PWH is to integrate mental health screening and treatment for common mental disorders and unhealthy drinking into HIV care. However, little is known about how PWH view the role of HIV car…
Gender, mental health symptoms, loss to clinic, and viral non-suppression 6 months after HIV care initiation among a cohort of people with HIV in Cameroon
Men initiating HIV care with poor mental health may be particularly vulnerable to unstable care engagement and viral non-suppression. Interventions are needed for men specifically to foster improved mental health
Changes in access to viral load testing, incidence rates of viral load suppression and rebound following the introduction of the ‘universal test and treat’ guidelines in Cameroon
Cameroon adopted and started implementing in 2016, the ‘universal test and treat’ (UTT) guidelines to fast-track progress towards the 95-95-95 ambitious targets to end the HIV epidemic. Achieving the third 95 (viral load suppression) is the most desirable target in HIV care. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this novel approach on access to viral load testing (VLT), viral suppression (VLS), and viral load rebound (VLR). A retrospective co…
Intersectional HIV- and Depression-Related Stigma Among People with HIV Entering HIV Care in Cameroon
Coping Strategies and Symptoms of Mental Health Disorders Among People with HIV Initiating HIV Care in Cameroon
Little is known about the coping strategies used among people with HIV (PWH), especially in sub-Saharan Africa, and the extent to which adaptive or maladaptive coping strategies are associated with symptoms of mental health disorders. We interviewed 426 PWH initiating HIV care in Cameroon and reported the prevalence of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies, overall and by presence of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Log binominal r…
Use of traditional medicine and control of hypertension in 12 African countries
BACKGROUND: Use of traditional medicine (TM) is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa as a treatment option for a wide range of disease. We aimed to describe main characteristics of TM users and estimate the association of TM use with control of hypertension. METHODS: We used data on 2128 hypertensive patients of a cross-sectional study (convenience sampling), who attended cardiology departments of 12 sub-Saharan African countries (Benin, Cameroon, Co…
Age-varying Associations of Depressive Symptoms and Heavy Episodic Drinking Throughout Adulthood Among People with HIV and Receiving care in Cameroon Within a National “treat all” Policy
Underestimation of potentially traumatic events resulting from underreporting of physical and sexual violence among people entering care for HIV in Cameroon
PTE assessment tools should assess exposure to behaviorally specific acts of violence to ensure appropriate referral to services among survivors of IPV. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
Depressive Symptoms, Gender, Disclosure, and HIV Care Stage Among People Living with HIV in Cameroon
Gender, Mental Health, and Entry Into Care with Advanced HIV Among People Living with HIV in Cameroon Under a National ‘Treat All’ Policy
Heavy episodic drinking and HIV disclosure by HIV treatment status among People with HIV in IeDEA Cameroon
The prevalence of recent HED was high among PWH in care. HED prevalence was highest among men and recent ART initiators. Longitudinal analyses should explore how HIV disclosure may support PWH in reducing or abstaining from HED through social support. Systematic HED screening and referral to care should be included in routine HIV clinical care, particularly for men, to improve engagement in the HIV care continuum in Cameroon
Population awareness of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in Buea, Cameroon
There exists a significant gap in population awareness about CVDs in Cameroon and this is similar to previous reports. Cost-effective community health education interventions taking into account socioeconomic status may be beneficial in this setting
Awareness and low uptake of post exposure prophylaxis for HIV among clinical medical students in a high endemicity setting
Overall, knowledge on PEP among clinical medical students in this setting was non-optimal with very low uptake PEP. Intensification of HIV curricula to involve PEP as well as continuous medical education programs and workshops are potential avenues to improve awareness in this vulnerable population
Coincidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension in a semi-urban Cameroonian population
Coincident diabetes and hypertension is as high as diabetes alone in this population, driven by sex, age and adiposity. Awareness, treatment and control remain unacceptably low
