A clinical case definition of post-Covid-19 condition by a Delphi consensus
Essential Emergency and Critical Care
BACKGROUND: Globally, critical illness results in millions of deaths every year. Although many of these deaths are potentially preventable, the basic, life-saving care of critically ill patients are often overlooked in health systems. Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC) has been devised as the care that should be provided to all critically ill patients in all hospitals in the world. EECC includes the effective care of low cost and low co…

The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3)
IMPORTANCE: Definitions of sepsis and septic shock were last revised in 2001. Considerable advances have since been made into the pathobiology (changes in organ function, morphology, cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, and circulation), management, and epidemiology of sepsis, suggesting the need for reexamination. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and, as needed, update definitions for sepsis and septic shock. PROCESS: A task force (n = 19) with experti…

Pseudocyesis
There is a paucity of information concerning the interrelationship of psychiatric and neuroendocrine abnormalities in pseudocyesis. We have studied two patients using a multimodal investigatory approach, with particular attention to the association of depression and alterations in endocrine secretory patterns. Both patients had abnormal growth hormone secretory patterns, as demonstrated by lack of sleep-associated peaks and the absence of a respo…
A case study of developmental phonological dyslexia
H.M. is a 17-year-old girl of at least average intelligence and with an above-average oral vocabulary. She is impaired at non-word reading in comparison to word reading. She is incapable of reading any long nonsense words or long unusual regular words correctly. Many of her non-word reading responses are lexicalizations. She reads non-words homophonic with real words better than she reads non-words that are not homophonic with real words. Her rea…

The Motives of Jacques de Vaucanson
Minds, Machines and Metaphors
It is well-known that between about 1945 and 1970 the mind (brain) of man was an electronic digital computer; indeed it is so well-known that one might suppose the issues thereby raised to be dead or worse, passe. And yet the topic continues, to be debated, amost daily, in the professional journals of philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, and many others. The debate proceeds not only in terms of rational argument and hard-won facts concernin…
