In 1975, as part of a socio-medical survey in a southern province of Iran, the influence of socio-cultural variables on behaviour in relation to illness and on beliefs about the causes of disease was examined. The social environment seems to have a cumulative effect on the educational achievement of the young. This study examined the degree of literacy and the educational attainment of the tribal population, and measured its relationship to family income.The findings reveal that formal schooling has not been fully accepted by the nomad population.
