  • Nature-based tourism or mining tourism, a case study of sustainable tourism

    Open Access•Ross Taplin•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2026•Referências: 34

Nature-based tourism depends on natural environments such as forests, but human activity can damage these environments making this tourism unsustainable. Alternatively, human changes to the environment can become tourist destinations. Unlike past research that typically examines nature-based tourism and tourism to mine sites separately, this study makes a direct comparison between these two forms of tourism. A randomised hypothetical trip to a fo…

  • Quantifying data quality after removing respondents who fail data quality checks

    Open Access•Ross Taplin, Ross H Taplin•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2025

Check Questions (CQs) are used to scrutinise whether respondents are providing quality data and these are becoming more important to ensure data quality, especially with the use of online panels. Often the proportion of people passing these questions are used as a summary of data quality, but this is flawed and of limited value when assessing the quality of a study. This paper introduces a new statistic, the data quality index Q^, to measure the …

  • Ability of residents to assess relative risk from tourists during the Covid-19 pandemic

Michael Volgger, Carolina Inés Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2024•Referências: 26

This paper compares relative risk perceptions of residents to inbound tourists from countries with different COVID-19 profiles. Results suggest residents are able to distinguish between COVID-19 risks based on the incidence of COVID-19 in the tourists’ source country. Residents’ risk perceptions were better aligned with the absolute number of cases (ignoring population size) in tourists’ country of origin than with the number of COVID cases per c…

  • A two-dimensional approach to travel motivation in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic

Annika Aebli, Michael Volgger et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

Travel motivation has been discussed as an important topic in the tourism crisis literature. However, previous studies have largely focussed on demotivational factors in the context of crises. This study explores motivators and demotivators to travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. By interviewing potential tourists and tourism destination managers, this study finds evidence for a need of a two-dimensional reasoning that draws on Herzberg’s two-fac…

  • Quantifying spillover and halo effects

Ross Taplin, Michael Volgger et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

Analogous to side effects in medical research, spillover and halo effects refer to unintended effects of interventions. Tourism and research in related areas have only begun to acknowledge these exist. Future research should quantify their magnitude to enable cost–benefit analysis, for example of whether an intervention to reduce carbon footprint does so when the total effect of interventions is included. Utilizing data from an experiment aimed a…

  • Point-of-consumption interventions to promote virtuous food choices of tourists with self-benefit or other-benefit appeals

Claudia Cozzio, Michael Volgger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2022

There is very limited research on point-of-consumption/point-of-purchase interventions to promote more ecological and healthier food choices among tourists. To fill this gap, this paper analyses the impact of different factual appeals including information about taste (placebo), nutrients, carbon footprints and distance of transportation on food choices of tourists at hotel salad buffets. The research pursued a randomised field experiment in two …

  • A cross-sectional international study shows confidence in public health scientists predicts use of Covid-19 non-pharmaceutical interventions

    Open Access•Shaun Goldfinch, Ross Taplin•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Building and maintaining confidence in public health scientists provides a key tool to manage pandemics. Credible, effectively communicative - and independent - medical and scientific leaders may be central to pandemic control success. For digital measures, trust in government and privacy protection is central. Political and social factors are important to understand successful public health policy implementation

  • The impact of national park and Unesco world heritage site designations on visit intentions

Michael Volgger, Ross Taplin•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2022•Citada por: 3•Referências: 2

Existing research finds inconclusive evidence of tourism benefits of designating new National Parks (NP) and UNESCO World Heritage sites (WHS). This research advances this ongoing discussion by using a randomised experiment to test causal effects of these common protected area designations on future visit intention among domestic tourists in Australia. It also tests for moderating effects exerted by tourist beliefs and advertising strategy. The s…

  • Growing the Volunteer Pool

    Open Access•Leonie Lockstone‐binney, Kirsten Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2021•Referências: 9

There are ongoing management and societal challenges affecting volunteering participation. These place a premium on organizations identifying individuals that currently do not volunteer but have the willingness and capacity to do so, the “Potentials”. Supplementing the limited non-volunteer literature, we seek to quantify this potential volunteer pool using constructs aligned to the willingness, capability and availability dimensions from Meijs e…

  • Trust in government increased during the Covid‐19 pandemic in Australia and New Zealand

Open Access•Shaun Goldfinch, Ross Taplin et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2021•Citada por: 27•Referências: 2

Using an online panel, we surveyed a representative sample of 500 each in Australia and New Zealand during July 2020, in the middle of the Covid‐19 pandemic. We find trust in government has increased dramatically, with around 80% of respondents agreeing government was generally trustworthy. Around three quarters agreed management of the pandemic had increased their trust in government. Over 85% of respondents have confidence that public health sc…

  • Who adopts the Airbnb innovation? An analysis of international visitors to Western Australia

Michael Volgger, Christof Pforr et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 54

Airbnb is the most prominent example of novel peer-to-peer networks in tourism. This new form of accommodation provision may alter demand structures in tourism destinations and has led to uncertainty amongst established accommodation providers and destination marketers. To gain a better understanding of Airbnb adopters, this paper systematically compares actual travel behaviour of Airbnb users in a specific destination with that of visitors stayi…

    Ross Taplin, Ross H Taplin et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2016•Citada por: 6•Referências: 34

Providing visitors with satisfying experiences is integral to park management. Research has inferred the determinants of satisfaction and loyalty through theorizing, observational studies, and statistical correlations. This article advocates randomized experiments as a complementary method for testing the causal effect of selected management interventions that change service quality on satisfaction and loyalty. An experiment using ranger presence…

  • A Benchmarking Method for Visitor Management by National Park Agencies

    Susan A Moore, Ross Taplin•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2014

Performance evaluation has only recently entered the lexicon of national park visitor management, in response to accountability concerns, commercialization of services, and fiscal constraints. Benchmarking, as part of such evaluations, is widespread practice in the hospitality sector but has been slow making its way into park visitor management. As such, the aim of this article is to develop and apply benchmark importance-performance analysis (BI…

Using a simplified NED index that accommodates a developing country setting, the results show a low level of NED. Only 2% of sampled companies make disclosures for all eight basic environmental issues in the NED index. Larger companies and resource companies disclose significantly more NED. Clearly there is sco…
