  • Motivating Self-Efficacy in Diverse Biomedical Science Post-baccalaureate and Graduate Students Through Scientific Conference Implementation

Open Access•Kasey R Boehmer, Suelen Lucio Boschen De Souza et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

Tactics to increase the number of underrepresented (UR) students in biomedical research PhD training programs have not yet translated to UR faculty numbers that reflect the diversity of the United States. Continued interventions are required to build skills beyond those that result in placement into a PhD program. We hypothesize that successful interventions must build skills that give UR students foundations for confident self-efficacy in leader…

  • The magnitude of error in conventional bulk-sediment radiocarbon dates from central North America

    Open Access•Eric C Grimm, L James Maher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Although the carbon-reservoir problem with bulk-sediment radiocarbon dates from lakes has long been recognized, many synoptic studies continue to use chronologies derived from such dates. For four sites in central North America, we evaluate chronologies based on conventional radiocarbon dates from bulk sediment versus chronologies based on accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates from terrestrial plant macrofossils. The carbon-reserv…

  • Paleobiology of the Sand Beneath the Valders Diamicton at Valders, Wisconsin

Open Access•L James Maher, Louis J Maher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

Previously undescribed pollen, plant macrofossils, molluscs, and ostracodes were recovered from a 2.5-m-thick glaciolacustrine unit of silty sand and clay at Valders, Wisconsin. The interstadial sediment was deposited about 12,200 14 C yr B.P. after retreat of the Green Bay lobe that deposited diamicton of the Horicon Formation, and before advance of the Lake Michigan lobe that deposited the red-brown diamicton of the Valders Member of the Kewaun…

  • Palynological and Radiocarbon Evidence for Deglaciation Events in the Green Bay Lobe, Wisconsin

Open Access•L James Maher, Louis J Maher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1996

A new and significant site of organic silty sand has been found beneath the Valders till at Valders Quarry in northeastern Wisconsin. This is now the earliest known late-glacial site associated with red till ice advances in the western Great Lakes area. Leaves of terrestrial plants washed into a small depression provide a date of 12,965 ± 200 yr B.P. (WIS-2293), which is significantly older than the Two Creeks Forest Bed (ca. 11,800 yr B.P.). Per…

  • Patterns of Holocene Environmental Change in the Midwestern United States

    Open Access•Richard G Baker, L James Maher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

Four pollen sequences along a transect from north-central Iowa to southeast Wisconsin reveal the distribution of prairie and forest during the Holocene and test the use of pollen isopolls in locating the Holocene prairie-forest border. Prairie was dominant in central Iowa and climate was drier than present from about 8000 to 3000 yr B.P. During the driest part of this period in central Iowa (6500-5500 yr B.P.), mesic forest prevailed in eastern I…

  • Palynological Studies in the Western Arm of Lake Superior

    Open Access•L James Maher, Louis J Maher•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

Lake Superior sediments contain pollen whose changes through time can be correlated with dated pollen diagrams from small lakes in the region. A core collected in 1972 from the deep trough (265 m) off Silver Bay (47° 09′N, 91°20′W) penetrated 6.25 cm of taconite tailings, 55 cm of postglacial silty clay, and 93.5 cm of late-glacial varves. Seven levels in the core were dated by stratigraphic and palynological techniques. The varves stopped formin…

  • Greatlakean Substage

    Open Access•Edward B Evenson, William R Farrand et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1976

New evidence from recent field and seismic investigations in the Lake Michigan basin and in the type areas of the Valders, Two Creeks and Two Rivers deposits necessitates revision of late-glacial ice-front positions, rock- and time-stratigraphic nomenclature and climatic interpretations and deglaciation patterns for the period ca. 14,000–7,000 radiocarbon years B.P. The previously reported and long accepted pattern of deglaciation for the Lake Mi…

  • Lead-210 and Pollen Geochronologies on Lake Superior Sediments

    Open Access•Kenneth W Bruland, Minoru Koide et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

Rates of sedimentation in two Lake Superior deposits were determined by both ragweed pollen and 210 Pb geochronologies. The former yields an average rate over the time since the first appearance of enhanced concentrations of the pollen as a consequence of human settlement. Sedimentation rates derived on these two bases can be brought into accord if the first appearance of ragweed pollen in the sediments was around 1830 and if the sedimentation ra…

  • Absolute Pollen Diagram of Redrock Lake, Boulder County, Colorado

    Open Access•L James Maher, Louis J Maher•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1972

Redrock Lake is situated at 3,095 m in the subalpine zone on the east flank of the Front Range, Boulder County, Colorado. The lake lies on Pinedale moraine, and it contains 170 cm of organic sediments that overlie 10 cm of silty clay. The oldest of seven 14 C dates from the organic sediment is 9,490 ± 150 yr B.P., a minimum estimate of the time since Middle Pinedale ice receded from the lake basin. A percentage pollen diagram and an absolute poll…
