Genetic Portraits of the Yakut Regional Populations (Based on Y-Chromosome Polymorphism Data)
Y-chromosome polymorphisms in Nogai subethnicities in the context of Caucasian gene pools
The study of genetic history through Y-chromosome polymorphism in modern and ancient populations helps reconstruct ethnogenesis. Research on the Nogai gene pool, as descendants of ancient nomads, allows tracing migration routs in the Eurasian steppe corridor. The Nogai ethnic group formed in the Middle Ages, as a result of interactions of the populations of the Central Asian, West Siberian, Ural-Volga, North Caucasian, and East European historica…
Genetic Portraits of the Yakut Regional Populations (Based on Y-Chromosome Polymorphism Data)
We present data on SNP haplogroups and STR haplotypes of the Y-chromosome in main Yakut ethno-local populations. Clusters of STR haplotypes and median networks of principal haplogroup N3a2 (N-M1982) indicate three lines: N-M1983, N-M1933, and N-Y25011. The first one, widely distributed throughout Yakutia and present in one half of Yakut males, marks the putative descendants of Elley, the legendary progenitor of the Yakuts. Line N-M1933 is found w…
Diversity of gene pools in twelve Tuvan tribal groups (based on Y-chromosome haplogroup data)
Introduction. Studying the ethnogenesis of Tuvans through the prism of the gene pools of their ancestral groups makes it possible to highlight the problem of the Mongolian influence on the formation of their gene pool: Tuvans are characterized by close ethno-cultural ties with Mongol-speaking tribes of Central Asia; Tuvans have an increased contribution of the Mongoloid anthropological variant; the Tuvan language ranks first among Turkic language…
Genogeography of vitamin D receptor determinants (VDR gene) in Eurasian populations with different types of subsistence economy
Introduction. The body's ability to absorb vitamin D is determined, among other factors, by the activity of the vitamin D cellular receptor, which is encoded by the VDR gene. We considered intergroup differences in the carriage of VDR polymorphisms as the results of selection aimed at reducing the population frequencies of maladaptive variants. According to the literature, alleles A*TaqI (rs731236), G*BsmI (rs1544410), C*ApaI (rs7975232), and A*F…
The alliance of anthropology and populations genetics
Introduction. Russian population genetics arose in the depths of anthropology. Over time, the rapid development of genetic technologies created a tension between these two fields of science. In hope to strengthen the long-standing alliance between anthropology and genetics, this work attempts to describe some aspects of genetic characteristics that genetics deals with, discuss the problem of sample representativeness for so diverse genetic featur…

Introduction. The Y-gene pool of the southern Tuvan tribal groups – Soyan and Choodu – was first studied and their comparative analysis with representatives of Kyrgys (south-east of Tuva) and Oorzhak (west of Tuva) tribal groups was carried out. Purpose of the study: to determine the genetic status of the Soyan and Choodu tribal groups within the genetic landscape of the population of Southern Siberia. Materials and methods. The sample (total N=1…
Genetic Determinants of Carbohydrate Metabolism
Introduction. The authors consider the features of genetic determinants of disaccharide assimilation as the corollary of adaptation to the environment. The aim of the study was to assess the polymorphism of the genes that determine activity of disaccharidase enzymes lactase (LCT, rs4988235), trehalase (TREH, rs2276064) and sucrase-isomaltase (SI, rs781470490) in different territorial groups of Evenks. Materials and methods. Biomaterial samples fr…
Variability of UCP1 and UCP3 uncoupling protein genes in relation to climate in indigenous populations of Siberia and the Far East
Introduction. Several studies have demonstrated a correlation between variations in genes regulating human uncoupling proteins (UCP) and environmental factors. However, information on the intra- and interpopulation diversity of allele and genotype frequencies of UCP1 and UCP3 within the territory of Russia remains insufficient. This study aims to investigate the intra- and inter-ethnic variability of genetic determinants of activity of uncoupling…
Cline in genetic diversity of trehalase deficiency determinants in populations of Southern Siberia, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and Mongolia
Introduction. Trehalose or mushroom sugar has been increasingly used in the food industry in the past decades. To be absorbed in the human intestine, trehalose needs to be broken down by an enzyme known as trehalase. Today, it is known that the G→A substitution in the rs2276064 locus of the TREH gene results in the reduced activity of this enzyme. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of TREH (rs2276064) alleles and genotypes in the …
Does genetic memory of the Adyghe gene pool composition perpetuate itself? Genetic portraits of Adyghe tribes drawn from the new data about Y-chromosome polymorphisms
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the possibility of preserving the genetic memory of the original architectonics of Adygeans gene pool by studying the modern gene pools of ten clan groups. Materials and methods. Ten tribal populations of Adygeans as well as Ubykhs (total N=616) were studied by a unified informative panel of SNP-markers of Y-chromosome (59 SNP and 17 STR). Genetic portraits of each population were created, and their positio…
The Central Asian component in the gene pool of the Tuvan tribal group Mongush
Introduction. Historical sources, as well as ethnographic, anthropological and linguistic data, speak of a significant influence of the Mongol-speaking tribes on the ethnogenesis of the Tuvans. Instead, the degree of Mongolian influence on the gene pool can only be assessed in molecular genetic studies. In this work, according to the data of complete sequencing of the C2-M217 haplogroup, a population screening of the Y-gene pool of the most numer…
The peculiarity of sub-ethnic groups of Nenets in genetic determinants of the metabolism of sucrose, trehalose and lactose
Introduction. The diet of indigenous northerners is changing significantly on account of the rapid growth in volume and variety of consummated food sugars. Concurrently, an arrow of northern aboriginal groups are known to have an increased percentage of genetically determined disorders of disaccharide metabolism. The study aimed to assess the polymorphism of genes and alleles that determine production or activity of sucrase-isomaltase, trehalase …
In search of the Alan heritage
Introduction. The question of whether the Alans left a genetic heritage in the modern population of the North Caucasus, and if they did, which populations carry it in their gene pool, is not only a problem of basic science, but also an acute issue of public discussion. Population genetics can test the hypothesis of preserving the contribution of the thousand-year history of the Alanian tribes to the gene pools of the modern peoples of the Caucasu…
The Chukchi of Kamchatka
Results and discussion. Y-chromosomes of the Kamchatkan Chukchi show a low diversity, being dominated by two variants N3a5b-B202 (57%) and N3*-M178* (19%), both virtually absent in the neighboring groups of Kamchatka. Phylogenetic analysis of the major lineages reveals some similarity with the populations of Chukotka (including Yupik Eskimo) at the level of clusters and closely matching haplotypes. More likely, this similarity can be explained by…

These genomes include at least 5.8 million base pairs that are not present in the human reference genome. Our analysis reveals key features of the landscape of human genome variation, including that the rate of accumulation of mutations has accelerated by about 5% in non-Africans compared to Africans since divergenc…
Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans
Genetic history of Native Americans Several theories have been put forth as to the origin and timing of when Native American ancestors entered the Americas. To clarify this controversy, Raghavan et al. examined the genomic variation among ancient and modern individuals from Asia and the Americas. There is no evidence for multiple waves of entry or recurrent gene flow with Asians in northern populations. The earliest migrations occurred no earlier…

Ancient DNA from European Early Neolithic Farmers Reveals Their Near Eastern Affinities
In Europe, the Neolithic transition (8,000-4,000 B.C.) from hunting and gathering to agricultural communities was one of the most important demographic events since the initial peopling of Europe by anatomically modern humans in the Upper Paleolithic (40,000 B.C.). However, the nature and speed of this transition is a matter of continuing scientific debate in archaeology, anthropology, and human population genetics. To date, inferences about the …

The Nanai Clan Samar
Members of the Nanai clan Samar reside in the Gorin area of the Khabarovsk Territory. Their gene pool was studied using the SNP markers of the Y-chromosome. The major haplogroup, occurring in more than 83% of clansmen, is the northern Eurasian haplogroup N1c1-M178. Four other haplogroups are С*-М130, I*-M170, J2a1а-M47, and O2-P31. The most frequent haplogroup, N1c1-М178, indicates mostly Tungus origin of the Samar clan; other haplogroups detecte…
