This research describes and analyzes the local history, use, meaning, and impact of the term “Rutter,” a colloquial term used in southeastern Ohio. The use of “Rutter” is closely associated with other negative Appalachian stereotypes. “Rutter” is a local surname that seems to have undergone a process of pejoration.
