Advancing rural cancer control
PURPOSE: Given well-documented rural-urban disparities in cancer outcomes, we conducted a portfolio analysis to characterize rural cancer control-focused grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) between fiscal years 2016 and 2024 and to identify opportunities for future research. METHODS: ISearch, an NIH portfolio analysis tool, was used to identify rural-focused cancer control research grants funded by NCI. 128 grants were analyzed f…
Point-of-sale, court-ordered, cigarette-related corrective statements
Objective To estimate the prevalence of US adults’ exposure to point-of-sale corrective statements about the health effects, addictiveness, and deceptive marketing of cigarettes, as well as reactions to these messages. Methods We analysed data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey, a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of the US civilian non-institutionalised population aged 18+ (March–September 2024, N=7278). Weig…
Contributions to Research and Practice Made by the National Cancer Institute’s Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch
The Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch at the U.S. National Cancer Institute was founded in 1999 in response to increasing evidence demonstrating a link between effective health communication and improved cancer-related outcomes and in recognition of the rapid and dramatic technological changes that were transforming health communication at the turn of the 21st century. For the past 25 years, the Health Communication and Informa…
The Effects of Prompt Interventions on Web Survey Response Rate and Data Quality Measures
Previous survey research has found that prompt interventions for speeding and straightlining were effective at reducing these undesirable response behaviors in web surveys. However, the effects of prompt interventions on data quality measures are mixed, and it is unclear how prompt interventions affect key survey estimates. We conducted an experiment on prompt interventions using the National Cancer Institute’s 2019 Health Information National Tr…

Survey of the Health of Urban Residents
Prevalence and correlates of US adult public opinion on restricting junk food advertising to children on social media
Objective: To describe US adults’ levels of support, neutrality and opposition to restricting junk food advertising to children on social media and explore associations with socio-demographic and health-related characteristics. Design: In 2020–2021, we used cross-sectional data from the National Cancer Institute’s 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey to estimate the prevalence of opinions towards advertising restrictions and correlates …
Rurality, Rural Identity, and Cancer Control
Population prevalence and predictors of self-reported exposure to court-ordered, tobacco-related corrective statements
In the first 6 months of corrective statement implementation, an estimated 40.6% of US adults reported at least one exposure to any corrective statement, and current smokers were more likely than never smokers to report exposure. Traditional media channels can be effective for tobacco-related message dissemination; however, they may fail to reach more than half of the adult population without additional targeted communication efforts
Smoke-free and tobacco-free colleges and universities in the United States
In 2017, just 16.7% of accredited, degree-granting institutions in the USA had 100% smoke-free or 100% tobacco-free protections. Despite progress, more efforts can ensure that students and staff benefit from comprehensive 100% smoke-free and 100% tobacco-free protections at US colleges and universities
Differences in Access to and Use of Electronic Personal Health Information Between Rural and Urban Residents in the United States
PURPOSE: The increase in use of health information technologies (HIT) presents new opportunities for patient engagement and self-management. Patients in rural areas stand to benefit especially from increased access to health care tools and electronic communication with providers. We assessed the adoption of 4 HIT tools over time by rural or urban residency. METHODS: Analyses were conducted using data from 7 iterations of the National Cancer Insti…
Predictors of eHealth Usage
BACKGROUND: Recent eHealth developments have elevated the importance of assessing the extent to which technology has empowered patients and improved health, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. With noted disparities across racial and social groups in chronic health outcomes, such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes, it is essential that researchers examine any differences in the implementation, uptake, and impact of eHealth strategie…
The role of reported tobacco-specific media exposure on adult attitudes towards proposed policies to limit the portrayal of smoking in movies
Media campaigns to prevent tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke have had value beyond the intended impact of single-issue campaigns; exposure to anti-tobacco campaigns and public dialogue about the dangers of tobacco seem also to be associated with shaping perceptions of the social world related to norms about tobacco, and ideas about regulating the portrayal of smoking in movies
Community Entry in Conducting Rural Focus Groups
This article explores the value of community collaboration in a qualitative study of diabetes. In 1999, the Appalachian Diabetes Coalition of West Virginia University's Prmntion Research Center employed a statewide effort to conduct focus groups in West Virginia to elicit cultural perspectives on diabetes and its management. The success of this research depended on community participation at many levels, particularly because of the rural, often g…
