  • Situation Analysis of a New Effort of Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) for Maternal Health in Upper West Region in Rural Ghana

Open Access•Chieko Matsubara, Maxwell Ayindenaba Dalaba et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

A free maternal health policy started in Ghana in 2008, however, health facility utilization is still low, and out-of-pocket payments (OOPPs) are putting households at risk of catastrophic expenditure. To improve this situation, some rural communities have assigned a midwife to a health post called community-based health planning and services (CHPS), where only assistant nurses are allocated. This study explored the effectiveness of the new appro…

  • What values drive communities’ nutrition priorities in a resource constrained urban area in South Africa

    Open Access•Agnes Erzse, Teurai Rwafa-Ponela et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our study demonstrates how public engagement can facilitate the incorporation of community values and programmatic preferences into nutrition priority setting, enabling a responsive approach to local community needs, especially in resource constrained contexts. Findings could guide policy makers to facilitate more appropriate decisions and to improve nutrition in the first 1000 days of life

  • Children born during the hunger season are at a higher risk of severe acute malnutrition

Open Access•Engelbert A Nonterah, Paul Welaga et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2022

Heightened food insecurity in the hunger season increases the risk of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in childhood. This study examined the association of season of birth with SAM in a Guinean Sahelian ecological zone. We analyzed routine health and sociodemographic surveillance data from the Navrongo Health and Socio-demographic Surveillance System collected between 2011 and 2018. January-June, the period of highest food insecurity, was defined …

  • Neonatal mortality rates, characteristics, and risk factors for neonatal deaths in Ghana

Open Access•Shadrach Dare, Abraham Oduro et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2021

BACKGROUND: Reducing neonatal mortality rates (NMR) in developing countries is a key global health goal, but weak registration systems in the region stifle public health efforts. OBJECTIVE: To calculate NMRs, investigate modifiable risk factors, and explore neonatal deaths by place of birth and death, and cause of death in two administrative areas in Ghana. METHODS: Data on livebirths were extracted from the health and demographic surveillance sy…

  • Supporting maternal and child nutrition

Open Access•Cornelius Debpuur, Engelbert A Nonterah et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: Despite efforts to improve maternal and child nutrition, undernutrition remains a major public health challenge in Ghana. The current study explored community perceptions of undernutrition and context-specific interventions that could improve maternal and child nutrition in rural Northern Ghana. Design: This exploratory qualitative study used ten focus group discussions to gather primary data. The discussions were recorded, transcribed…

  • The state of enrollment on the National Health Insurance Scheme in rural Ghana after eight years of implementation

Open Access•Anthony Kwarteng, James Akazili et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2019

Despite the introduction of policy exemptions as an equity measure, the poorest of the poor were rarely identified for exemption. The government must urgently resource the Department of Social Welfare to identify the poor for NHIS enrollment

  • Factors associated with appropriate home management of uncomplicated malaria in children in Kassena-Nankana district of Ghana and implications for community case management of childhood illness

Open Access•Soter Ameh, Paul Welaga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Half of caregivers who used antimalarial drugs practiced appropriate HMM. Educational status and utilisation of hospitals in previous illness were associated with appropriate HMM. Health education programmes that promote the use of the current first line antimalarial drugs in the appropriate regimen should be targeted at caregivers with no education in order to improve HMM in communities where parasitological diagnosis of malaria may not be feasi…

  • Cause-specific childhood mortality in Africa and Asia

Open Access•Peter Kim Streatfield, Wasif Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Childhood mortality, particularly in the first 5 years of life, is a major global concern and the target of Millennium Development Goal 4. Although the majority of childhood deaths occur in Africa and Asia, these are also the regions where such deaths are least likely to be registered. The INDEPTH Network works to alleviate this problem by collating detailed individual data from defined Health and Demographic Surveillance sites. By re…

  • Malaria mortality in Africa and Asia

Open Access•Peter Kim Streatfield, Wasif Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a major cause of infectious disease mortality in tropical regions. However, deaths from malaria are most often not individually documented, and as a result overall understanding of malaria epidemiology is inadequate. INDEPTH Network members maintain population surveillance in Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites across Africa and Asia, in which individual deaths are followed up with verbal autopsies…

  • Self-reported health and functional limitations among older people in the Kassena-Nankana District, Ghana

Open Access•Cornelius Debpuur, Paul Welaga et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2010

BACKGROUND: Ghana is experiencing significant increases in its ageing population, yet research on the health and quality of life of older people is limited. Lack of data on the health and well-being of older people in the country makes it difficult to monitor trends in the health status of adults and the impact of social policies on their health and welfare. Research on ageing is urgently required to provide essential data for policy formulation …

  • Coming home to die? the association between migration and mortality in rural South Africa

Open Access•Paul Welaga, Victoria Hosegood et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

External in-migrants have a higher risk of dying, especially from HIV related causes, than residents, and in areas with substantial migration this needs to be taken into account in evaluating mortality statistics and planning health care services
