On Cheyenne Sociopoutical Organization
In a recent (1974) article John H. Moore has challenged the validity of earlier ethnologies of the Cheyenne Indians, with respect to their presentation of Cheyenne sociopolitical organization. Moore advances a dialectic model, positing matrilineal, matrilocal uterine bands from which were drawn the Peace Chiefs, who constituted a uterine tribal council. In frequent opposition, were the military societies, which Moore identifies as agnatic units o…

Anthropological Perspectives on National Character
Anthropological interest in the field of national character was stimulated by World War II and motivated by a desire to improve transnational understanding. Since 1956, however, anthropologists have tended to withdraw from con tinuing work on national character, which they look upon as a specialized extension of personality and culture. The holistic emphasis of cultural anthropology is more comfortably ex pressed in the study of tribal societies …

Fundamental Legal Concepts as Applied in the Study of Primitive Law
I.To date, there has been too scant a recognition of the fertile possibilities in the study of primitive law for the study of law in general. In consequence, the ethnology of law has been to a considerable extent a field of neglected opportunity for the anthropologist and student of law alike.Students of law, enchanted with the intricate mazes of their stately formal garden, have generally looked on the field of primitive lawoas an undomesticated …

Underground Kiva Passages
Florence Hawley Ellis (1952) has brought some new ethnological evidence from the pueblo of Jemez to bear on the question of certain archaeological features found in a number of prehistoric southwestern kiva structures. Details are given of various acts of legerdemain for the magical production into the center of the kiva of small animals and shelled corn apparently out of nothing. These are ritual shows put on by the initiated to impress the lay …

Every great novelist by virtue of his capacity to present essential aspects of contemporary life is creating documents which will have a different significance for later generations. There are passages in Balzac which when read today seem predictions not merely of the coming domination of finance capital but of its harmful social consequences. But it would be idle to believe that these passages had a similar significanc…

The Asiatic Origin of a Myth of the Northwest Coast
The purpose of this paper is to set forth certain suggestive parallels between the Asiatic Wandering Animals and Objects Tale2 and the story of Raven's War on the South Wind.3 The latter myth occurs in several variants among the tribes of the Northwest Coast of North America. Comparative analysis of the two tales reveals an internal congruity of form such as is more reasonably interpreted as the result of genetichistorical connection rather than …
